Cooling my Amps...

I am having a problem with my 800 Watt Fosgate Sub amp overheating. I have 2 fans hitting it, but its not enough.. Any suggestions ? Im using the small fans that you would use on computers and such...
Here is a pic of one of the fans...

More pics on page 13 of my homepage..

hmm...never really heard about fosgate amps getting too hot. but you might want to try to aim the airflow over the heatsink instead of on the side there. it's the heat sink job to disapate the heat, and it should help even more with that fan blowing air across them.

What OHM load are you running it at? The lower the impedence the hotter the amp is going to run. If you let us know what you're running off of the amp and how it's wired we could probably give you a better idea of what to do.

I agree with JDawg. Might be an impedance issue and/or not enough current getting to the amp. Both situations will cause the amp to prematurely shut down.

Either that or you just need MORE POWER! (he he he)

i really think what fosgate fan said makes more sense than anything. think of it how a computer works. there are no fans directly aimed at any component of a PC. that's why heatsinks exist, it does all the heat releasing job. what is needed is fans to help circulate the air aka, keep the hot air away from hanging around the heatsinks. they don't leave the area, the heatsink has nowhere to release the heat, the heat backs up, the amp overheats, and boom, bye bye amp, bye bye fuse, or if you're lucky, it goes into protect mode. my suggestion, which is how i'm currently building my amprack, and like fosgate fan said, aim the fans at your heatsinks. you want the fans to creat a constant movement over the heatsinks to keep te hot air moving away.

ALSO, i don't know hhow yours is setup, but i have 4 fans, 2 aiming at the heatsinks, and 2 on the other side, aiming AWAY. this keeps air circulating. again, like a computer, the fan in the front brings air in, and the fan in the back takes air out of the computer, keeping the circulating.

hope this helps.

nice setup Polo. I set my old ones up with an ignition source power so they would run even if the system is off so things would stay nice and cool.

Kloogy, I wasn't talking about power from your battery, I was talking about a bigger/stronger amp. If you run it hard enough to shut it down, it is time to upgrade.

Good luck

Thats not the case in this setup. I really am getting these Eclipses to hit hard and tight, and I like it. The Amp is just not getting enough ventilation because of the location it is in. If I take the cover off the system, and open my trunk, it never shuts down. Thanks for your feedback.

yes i've used 2 RF amps so far, and non of them have overheated on me before. plus living in the crazy houston heat with a dark gray maxima doesn't help with the interior temperature of my trunk. hope things will turn out good for ya after the air is moving across those heatsinks!
