Stock HU fried!

So I've decided to upgrade the audio in my 03 SE non-bose but wanted to keep the factory hu. So wired my ish to the hi-pass inputs on my speaker amp and when I plugged in my antenna the cd player started to fry! it was making a crackling noise and smoked! i tried turning on my radio, only the radio and tape player work... So by saving my money and installing my own crap I end up having to spend more money on an aftermarket h/u. And i'm tempted to buy the SWI-X for my steering wheel, spending more money, and further defeating the purpose of DIY...

Please if anyone on the forums with a 5th gen non-bose with aftermarket stuff and a stock radio let me know of your success. I'm positive nothing was wired incorrectly as I worked on this with someone else and nothing shorted (well except for the internals of the cd player)...

Many factors! I would say wiring, however you are confident that your wiring was good, also if there are any inline fuses this should not have happened. But usually if someone wired a HU directly to power without any fuses and there was a short in the circuit this is usually the result. Did you have the ground wire hooked in before you attached the antenna plug?

Very difficult to answer your question, if you were close by I would help you troubleshoot it. DO you have a digital multimeter?

So i bought a new head unit....and when I go to take the factory one out of the bracket, the screws were in so tight the heads STRIPPED! is this seriously a Nissan self-destruct theory because I've worked on many cars before and never have I encountered such bullsh!t trouble on a japanese car (the european cars are the gayest for diy)

I wasn't using the multimeter but I was being ghetto and used my capacitor charging light instead...It's essentially the same thing as long as one end is on 12v+ and the other is on a bolt to the chassis.......don't laugh i know it's nigrig status
