PAC adaptor question

Alright sorry for a second thread, but can someone fully explain this thing to me. Do I have to get this Pac-X one. If so, I have to mount something external to the HU??? Is this correct?

Secondly, is there a real write up for installing this thing? The blurb in the FAQ is vague. WHen I cut the wire from the old harness, what do I connect it to on the new HU??

Any and all help is greatly appreciated by a stereo newb who wants to get his HU installed right the first time. . . .

Rather not get

I just got mine in the mail today. The unit has an infrared emitter that must be placed in the line of site of the HU. I posted the question on the best place to put the emitter, but haven't received any replies.

As to the wiring, the directions that come with the PAC tell you which wires to connect to what. My 03 w/o Bose requires a couple of resistors in line with the connectons to the remaining two wires from the steering wheel. I'm going to do it in the morning and take pics. I figure it'll take about an hour or less. I will let you know how it turns out.

Well, I have it in and working. I had a little trouble programming it until I read the little blurb about programming each function within 7 sec of the last. Once I got that straight it was simple to program.

I am having trouble deciding where to place the emitter though. I took some pics and will post the whole thing in detail later on. I wish someone had a suggestion on where to put the emitter before I start drilling holes in the dash. Sigh.

All done and working good. I placed the emitter right above the HU. The PAC is below the heater control unit.

See The complete How-To if you like.

The remote for your HU is necessery for this unit to work. It uses the remote to learn how to interface with the HU. Also, looking at the directions, it looks like many Sony HU's are incompatible with this unit. I don't know if others will work or not. What model is your HU?

I didn't think you had to have anything mounted outside the face, that sucks. I don't want to do that, but I don't want to lose steering functions, either. Thanks for the writeup bucket, that should help a lot.

The emitter is very small and looks pretty good when installed. Overall I am very pleased with it.
