Does changing an aftermarket HU require a new harness / adapter?

I currently have a Pioneer HU in my car, with all necessary harnesses & a BOSE adapter to interface with my BOSE system. I've been considering getting a new HU soon, probably one with MP3 capabilities, but I'm not sure if a new HU also means new harnesses to be purchased. I'm under the assumption that each HU would require it's own wiring harness to interface with the car's stock wiring, but from what I've seen on some sites, it just looks like one wiring harness is universal for all aftermarket decks? I'd hate buying a new deck only to realize I had more expenses coming my way
