Best Head Unit for $300 or less

I was wondering what some opinions are on head units. My budget is kind of tight but am tired of the hassle of the portable cd player with the tape adapter. I'm looking for something with a well layed out display and nothing that is too gawdy/busy. Simplicity is our friend.

Adam01GXE,
This is mearly a suggestion as I too am faced with upgrading my 5th generation Max
Can I suggest that you look at the Kenwood KDC mp 7017 or the 8017, Both have 22 RMS (40 peak) watts per channel internal and 4V preamp outputs for future upgrades.
Each is capable of playing CDR's and CDRW's and MP3's off
a disc (this is the advantage over last year's 7015 and 8015
models.)
As the Dash in the 5th Gen is rather slanted allowing the radio to be fully viewed from the windshield each of these radios is a D-mask model presenting a flat non-featured face when shut off thus looking like an ashtray or closed compartment.
Both of these radios list over $300 but could be had for under if you look around, I'm an avid Alpine buff but each of their models looks too tempting sitting on top of the dash.
The 7017 can be had for $235 + shipping off Ebay at a Dutch auction which requires no competitive bidding just a set price.
Just a thought.

I looked at the Kenwoods yesterday. The D-Mask is a good idea, but have you actually used it yet? When the face flips around, there isn't a good place to lock it back into position for use. Pretty much anywhere you would push, you would be hitting buttons. I do like the features that it offers though. I found a Sony model, cdx m650 today. i don't know about the whole motorized face technology. I'm afraid that it is just something else to fail and then I'm stuck not being able to get a CD in or out.

Ordinarily, the 4441 would cost around $360 with installation. The reason I got mine at a good rate is that I knew the manager of the shop who installed it (Also, it doesn't hurt when you refer a dealership his way). He is also going to hook me up on the CD Changer.
