Anything I should do when installing sound system?

I'm installing a new head unit and speakers this week-end in my 4th gen and was wondering if there's something I should be careful with especially for the max? Any trouble you guys ran into while changing the system? I don't have any experience in car sound system but my friend that did this a few times is gonna help me. This will save me like 100 for professional installation but I don't want to screw anything or burn my head unit or speakers. Where can I go for cheap prices in Montreal if it would be more safe?

Best thing if you want to save money is make sure you have someone helping/installing who knows what they're doing. Otherwise, if something gets damaged, that $100 you would have spent on professional installation would be a bargain.

just make sure to ground stuff first. or work with the positive battery cable off if you feel very unsure of yourself. other than that you should be cool. most "f" ups will pop fuses. i once droped my 4 ga. power wire right on my amp and it slid down and hit the ground wire. i nearlt craped my pants but it only blew the fuse. if possible run a remote wire and rca's to your trunk. saves time. you'll wanna add amps sooner or later so that way you don't have to go back behind the radio.

yeah if you find the wiring to be sub-par later, you can run all new like i have..the only original wiring on my 3rd gen thats still being used is the power antenna wire, the ground, and the always hot wire..i've run new 10ga power wire straight to the battery and 16 ga to all of my speakers..I ran the power wire because I had a problem with the thing cutting out and starting back up when i cranked it up, so i ran that wire and that fixed it..the h/u was starving itself for power..

Get someone who knows what they're doing... and watch what they do... I made the mistake of not watching and the idiot ran the RCA cables and power cable together... now I'm getting HORRIBLE interferance noise when the amps get hot, Im really pee'd off. I gotta run the RCA's on the passengers side during the weekend.

Depending on how nice your speakers that you're getting are. Think about upgrading all the speaker wiring. I went with 12 gauge myself (probably a little overkill) but the upgraded wire will make your mids sound much nicer.

make sure your stuff isnt bose.....if it is then you have to bypass all the amps in the car when replacing the speakers....also you should only need like 16ga speaker wire also you can leave the battery hooked up...if you hook power into the deck before you ground it, it still wont hurt it b/c its not grounded therefore its not making a complete circuit....however do not let the constant power touch and grounds if you do decide to leave the battery hooked up
