Question on Navigation upgrade....

I have 3 moniters in my car along with a DVD player. I was just pondering...how hard/easy is it to add Navi to my existing setup? Could I just buy the DVD Rom that normally sits in the trunk? How much would the Navi upgrade run me since I already have monitors?...HMMMMMMM.....

I was thinking about running something like that on my monitor. Along with some music videos to display. I was going to get a cheap laptop take it apart and retrofit it to work with the car. And then I was going to get a garmin gps receiver (i think they run around $90 or a M$ GPS Suite that runs around $115) And then hook it up to my laptop. Then I got navi! and videos!

Question....why do you need a laptop to hook up the GPS reciever? Will it not link up directly to the screen?

You can get software for the laptop for hooking up, easier to do and cheaper...i guess, i don't think u can hook the gps directly to a screen. Instead of getting an actually gps unit though, maybe you can buy hardware and software for laptops that can be used to create a gps.

From there however you would need a way to interface with buttons through the dash to the laptop, which can look crappy, and take some custom work....
So if you want a good custom look, don't even bother with a laptop. Look on ebay for a pathfinder GPS, u can throw it right in there and hook it up. That unit controls everything including radio, A/c, navigation, etc. Just good luck getting that working.

Tough choices, huh?

GOOD LUCK GUYS-----Ksgarcia-

yeah that would be one problem. I was thinking about hooking up a number pad and writing a program to link it all up so it would be easier to use. It is the cheapest, but also the most work.

The sound system can be hooked up if you had an aftermarket stereo with an auxillary input. Most pioneer head units have a cable you can buy for $30 (expensive, but no other choise) to plug into the back of the head unit.
