do you know this by experience? how about having the sub facing inboard or outboard? any thoughts on that?

If you face them towards the trunk is going to be loud but...Is an anoying rattling all that bass hitting the trunk without an escape....I personally dont like that, I have the subs facing towards the cabin i like it is a tigher bass like someone mention.. if you have ports you can face them straight but most people will tell you that is not the best...To me thats the best way and i will end up doing that with my current set up.
Get all the opinions and learn from them, but at the end of the day, you have to listen and choose the setup you like.
Also remember that music comming from a system sounds to most people different I have people giving me props for my system but to me is not to my standards YET....

By the way, what Square Kicker sub would fit perfectly in the space between the car and the trunk? A 8" or 10"?
First, figure out which you value more SQ or SPL, consider $ available and design from there. Square speakers inherently sacrifice some SQ for more surface area (SPL), so think about the tradeoff. Also, think about what type of music you will most often listen to and how you think it should sound, i.e. "boomy" or "tight". Consider if it is a sealed, ported or bandpass enclosure and the power available/needed to extract the most from each setup. There are many more considerations as well, but these are just a few I think may help you get you on your way.
my experience, facing the cabin, the seat absorb the bass, where the trunk would reverberate the bass. with my bandpass, it worked best sideways in the far corner, against the seat) and the ports fired towards the trunk door. But every car is different. u have to keep moving it till it sounds best for you.
i have my two 10's in a ported box and i have them facing my backseat...i think this gives the tighter cleaner bass sound...while facing the trunk is louder.....like everyone else is saying, personal preference is key, just play around and chose what you like...

agreed! I had a custom ported box made for 2 10s facing through the ski hole. Very tight response for SQ setup. Just wish the rest of my system was rock solid...
But anyways, I sold that box and subs, and I'm onto a new setup now. One single 12" CDT sub in a sealed box firing up through a hole cut in the rear deck. I have to seal off the back seat from the trunk for this to work right. I'm gonna try to get it done before xmas. Also CDT components up front going in and rear coaxials. Debating on the rears though, as I they will throw it off and I won't have a true front stage.
Sorry for the babbeling...

didn't kloogy have his eclipses firing up and he said that hit pretty d@mn good...good enough for the rearview mirror to fall off haha i have yet to do that with my solos
I am not a fan of aiming the sub toward the rear of the car. In my first Maxima, I had the sub in a box under the rear deck facing the back of the car. This did provide boomy bass, but there was a significant delay between the mids up front and the bass from the sub reaching my ears in the front seat. I did not like that at all.
In my new Maxima, I mounted 2 subs in the rear deck (in tiny aperiodic enclosures) firing up into the rear window. The difference is amazing. The bass is much, much tighter and there is no audible difference in time alignment between the subs and the front stage (indeed, the subs are much closer to the mids now).
I will never place a sub inside of a trunk again. The SQ just isn't good enough.

If you point it to the outside people will hear it more, if you point it inside people cant hear it outside but its a bit more punch, o yeah dont forget when you are buying a amp, dont look at the wattage output, look for THD%, the more Thud the more bass from the speakers. also if you dont have Dyno mat always point it inside cause it sounds like s&it

thd doesnt really matter if you have decent subs, but combine high thd with crappy subs, and dayum does shiat start to suck! Anyways, i recomend the rear deck. Mount them in the deck and seal off the decklid and seat from the trunk and you will be amazed. I think i'm doin 3 10s or 3 12's in the rear deck when i pay off my tuition.
If you plan to face them toward the cabin, I would suggest trying to seal off the trunk from the cabin as much as possible. I had a setup once w/2 12's and if I pointed it forward, I had to have the windows down for it to hit harder. Once I sealed mine, it was like nite and day.
i used to have my ports facing the trunk lid and that provided a lot of "boomy" bass. my set-up is for spl. but not i have a semi-custom box and i now have 2 ports facing the rear window and 2 ports facing the inside of my car. it sounds pretty good that way, very clean crisp boomy bass that way.
