What exactly are you buying? A head unit? All depends what features you want...i.e. flip down non-motorized face, built in crossover = Pioneer. There are other good brands out there also, but if you are staying mainstream with only those brands then theres no simple answer of which is better.

PS Dont ever buy anything from Crutchfield, you might as well take your money and flush it down the toilet. Check some custom shops in your area and get some more opinions, and mess around with the units on display to see which you like better.

it depends on the product. for either of the manufacturers i would only buy their head units. neither of the two make very good speakers or amps. alpine amps in my experience are better than pioneer but not by much. for head units i would suggest alpine unless you're looking at higher end pioneer premier stuff.

Alpine was always considered a leader in the head unit industry. Of course you have other manufacturers that have HU that compete with them (Eclipse, Nakamichi, Pioneer, Sony,) but I have always had nothing but great experiences with Alpine. I have 2 Alpine decks in my car and they both provide everything I need and want in HU's. Like everyone else has said it all depends on how much you want to spend and what features you are looking for. That determines a lot. I've never brought from Crutchfield before but I hear there have been problems with their equipment so RESEARCH and see what all you want in HU before making your decision.

personally, i think theyre ABOUT the same quality, if we're talking about Head Units anyway, although i think Alpine is usually a bit overpriced. Pioneer makes best bang for your buck IMO.

I know when it comes to navigation, Pioneer owns the rights to most of them. Kenwood buys from them, hence the higher cost of their product over Pioneer's.

pioneer is easy to use alpine is more technical at you price range if you buy a $200 alpine it will have a slot in the faceplate for where you put your cd and on pioneer the faceplate will go down and you put your cd in i like the go down i heard it keeps your player clean so no dust gets in my .02 ( two cents)

for 200 you can get a mid level alpine or pioneer. that will have a simmalar internal amp that wont sound great. or you could get a cd player with no internal amp, higher level pioneers you can get with no amp and alpine you can turn that amp off. but just because the cd player has a lot of features it will sound a lot better off a external amp no mater what you run coax. or components. if you run a 2 channel amp to your front speakers and keep the rear speakers running off your deck and have it setup so about 15% of sound comes from rear and the rest comes from your front speakers.

In my opinion, and in my personal experience:

I am more of an Alpine HU fan. I have always felt that Alpine's HUs are more dedicated to performance, whereas Pioneer aims for appearance. Alpines never had the fancy displays that Pioneers have had for a few years now. But, by the same token, Alpine has had better internal amps (V-drive) and tons of adjustable sound factors (i.e. a parametric EQ vs. Pioneer's graphic EQ). With regards to build quality, they're probably about the same. I really think once you get above JVC, Clarion, Explode (haha), and such that all build qualities are pretty much equal. And I know this isn't a great justification, but I just feel Alpine is the better product, though expensive.

I've tried both Pioneer and Alpine h/u's before. And the only reason why I'm using Pioneer now is #1: budget constraints and #2: internal parametric equalization. Just incase you haven't looked lately, the P6600 (not limited to only this particular model) has the EEQ 3-band parametric, -12dB/oct high-pass x-over, and -18dB/oct low-pass x-over sections. For the budget minded people, these features are very useful when you don't have the kind of cash to spend on outboard processors. Of course those built-in processors in the P6600 can't perform on the same level as outboard processors however, it does the job for the money. That's my .02.

***Forgot to mention***
The P6600 has the following too:
1) Sound Focus EQ which allows you to independently control the bass and treble of the front and rear speakers to shape the sound to your vehicles' contours.

2) EQ-EX which allows you to boost 63hz (bass) and 3khz (treble) to improve sound on certain programs depending on source. This is my personal favorite.
