whats going to be the best sub?

Im looking to buy a sub or a set of subs. what do you all think that the best sub is going to be. I want something that is going to hit hard and very clear. I dont want something that going to sound distorted.

also I dont know much about car audio so I am going to ask this. what is porting a sub supposed to do? I like the ideah b/c of the air being pushed out just by the sub but I want to know what the performance gain of it is.

Thanks for all your help!

Spend one week here----> www.termpro.com Browse the forums(all of them). People who specialize in all of the specific areas are very willing to help. Be patient on replies till the 10 or 11th of Jan. CES is on till then. At the end of the week, ask that same question. I garauntee you will be able to be specific. If you don't feel like doing that. Let us know what you are tying to accomplish by adding a sub. For instance, do you want SQ(sound quality), a very good reproduction of sound based on clarity, depth and "lifelike" feel. The other would be SPL(sound pressure level), an all out ear bashing session. Personally I prefer a mix of the two. Most important of all is your budget. What are you willing to spend upfront. The reoccuring cost will never stop once you become addicted like me.

Adire Brahma or an RE XXX are my votes. They are pretty much the same exact sub just different manufacturers. Both are very good for SQ and SPL. Im pretty sure porting a box allows for lower frequency response and maybe a little more spl.

Porting your sub will make it technically twice as loud with the same power.

My Vote is for the DD Audio 9500 series.

What is your pricerange?

If you want clear and hard. Memphis M-Class subs, with their M-Class amp.

And porting increases your SPL, more so than a sealed box. But you do lose some sound quality compared to a sealed.

Most people go with ported for the whole air factor. I can tell you, the Memphis will sound good in either style of box. Only problem is, the memphis subs requires a decent sized box.

Take a peek on my cardomain site. Both styles of boxes that are in my frontier are designed for Memphis subs. As you'll see in the photo's they're pretty big. I do know that sealed dual box is a little bit smaller than the 2 single boxes.

My vote, for a medium-high price range (300-400ish) Is the Adire Brahma.
for upper price range, DD 9500 series (...550+ )

There is no one answer to your question, beyond the make of the sub, the sound quality will be dependant upon the enclosure, sub placement, as well as the power you're running to it. As for the sub/subs you need to hit a few QUALITY car audio places and take a listen to some subs for yourself. MY personal favorites are Image Dynamics, Eclipse Aluminum and Titanium series subs and the old Kicker subs; XPL, as well as round Solobarics.

Similar subs, different retailers, same manufacturer. Well, same manufacturer until Adire switches build houses from Destijl to Compania Acustica de Chile.

A properly designed ported box can sound just as good as sealed. Each will have a distinct sound due to the group delay and other factors but whether or not one sounds better or worse is a personal opinion.

Soundsplinter - Same build house as Eclipse but without the high price. Another option is the Atlas series from Ascendant Audio. XBL^2 like the XXX and Brahma. Also with an adjustable Q.

Arc Flatline. But thats only MY opinion.

For a sub to give equal amounts of both SQ and SPL it will cost a decent amount. Like posted above the enclosure will make all the difference but final decision would be based on Your ears. Noone anywhere can tell you what sounds best and achieves what you want except for you.

For under 250. Look into Dayton Titanic and the Adire Shiva. Great subs!
