How to test my headunit.

Hello I am trying to get my new headunit to work, it worked at first and I got no sound but then it wouldnt power up.

I thought the harness (that connects to the factory conenction) has a fuse in it, acutally 2 it says .5a fuse. I purchased 5 amp fuses and replaced hoping it would then give power to my unit but still no luck.

My questions are when the fuse read .5a fuse is that really a ".5a" or a 5 amp fuse? if its not a 5amp fuse then I bought the wrong one and could be the reason why its still not powering up.

Also dont headunits get their power from the antenna adapter? so would the harness really cause it to not power up or am I wrong, please help I've been without sound for a while.

Unit: Farenheit DVD-75R

thanks

You said you replaced the fuse(s) in the stock wiring harness behind the radio?

You might want to check the fuse box near your left knee. Look for the radio fuse.

The fuses by my left knee were fine I looked at the Bose Fuse and the Audio fuse and they looked fine and intact. The harness for the player has 2 fuses, 2 cylindrical fuses.

in those 2 black cases (one box other cylindrical), the thing was they said .5a fuses, is that 5amps? or ".5a" fuses? cause for some reason I thought it was 5 amp fuses and I replaced with 5amp fuses, but still no luck.

I guess not, it just seemed like you checked some in the harness. I might of misread your first post.

The antenna has nothing to do with power. Where did you ground the unit? Keep in mind the factory harness does nopt have a ground and you will need to ground it yourself.

I didnt ground anything as the harness (from the org member I purchased it from) has already did the wiring on it and such, the harness worked at one point I was getting power to the unit but then when I was trying to fix my no sound issue I went to put the harness back in and got no power. A ground wire had gotten lose I believe and I fix it, but I did so with battery attached etc. I believe the cylindrical fuse (there are 2) one has blown (not too sure how to check to make sure) I replaced with what I believe is the proper fuse but still no power?

is this a grounding issue? because the ground wire that got a bit loose (was twisted and taped) I fixed but still no power.

please help a member with no audio what soever.

You have to ground the wire directly to the car. Theres no actual ground wire within the harness. This *could* fix your your problem

Possibly from the antenna which would be referred to as a "floating ground"

I see.

So to ground it should I tryi wrapping it around a screw and bolting down? (sounds rather ghetto)

Or would it be best to get one of those O ring like connectors and crimp the wire onto that?

Yes, use and O ring. Theres two 10mm bolts directly below the radio, either of those would work fine. Nothing ghetto about it, thats the way it is as there is no ground located in the harness.

thanks for the help try that.

I just meant ghetto in reference to wrapping the scew around a wire and bolting down, that would be nice if that was a good temp fix as I am about to drive for 4 hrs and would be cool to have music. I'll see if I can run out and get parts before I leave.

also has anyone heard of a .5 amp fuse?

one of the fuses that blew in the harness says .5amp.

I bought what I now believe is a 5 amp fuse would that also not cause the player to work. When reading in the Manual for the headunit it stated If I'm not getting power there are 2 options, A: key not in at the on position (duh. . .) B: Fuse is blown. If I replaced a blown fuses with the improper spec fuse that would still cause it not to work correct?

If you replace a fuse with a larger one, it will then bypass the fuse and blow the product in question if whatever problem that caused the first one to blow still exists.

I see, the funny thing is a hear CD spinning for a couple of sec when I put the key in and turn but then nothing.

The weird thing is I purchased this off an org member and had it already wired and such done it was plug and play, I wired up the screen and plugged and played and it did work but I blew a fuse later re-installing. I didnt think he had to ground anything or already had it setup as it worked at first but then later it didnt.

Its nice and sunny today so I'm going in and will re-check everything and try grounding and see if it works.

Against my morels I was tired of no sound eveywhere I go and taking apart my dash as much as I get into the car, I took it to a shop.

Basically some of the wires that were twisted and taped came loose, they said I didnt even need that harness that I had in there (see above) they wired everythign up soldered it down so no wires come loose. Didnt pay much and was glad to have sound again after so long, it all sound amazing and glad I can drive with music (or movies) playing.

thank you all for the help.

When I look at my stock adapter, I see a black wire running to the harness, and then running off somewhere in the car. Are you saying this is not a ground? I am using it as one in my stock deck and am having grounding problems i think.
