Question about capacitors
Question about capacitors
I just ordered an Audiobahn 1 farad capacitor. I've got three amps running about 900 watts. I have a big fuse holder under the hood, so do I need more fuses after the capacitor? I have a distribution block right now but it isn't fused. Do I need another individually fused distribution block after the cap in addition the the one near the battery?Any help is appreciated.
no you dont need fuses after the cap, just one main fuse atleast 12ft close to the battery. btw a cap is not necessary if you have a thick awg of wire, it just put more stress on the altenator because its just an acc.
btw i have 3 caps for sale pm me

I have 4 fairly large Arc amps, I have better things to do with my money then waste on useless products like a cap.
Save your money and invest it into something more useful.

Best bet is to upgrade your alt. Adding a second battery will cause more strain on your stock alt....Chris you know this !
You can try adding a yellow top but get a battery isolator, wire the amps directly to the yellow top. You can find an isolator for about $20+ shipping on eBay. Put the turn on wire for the isolator (the isolator is only a glorified relay) on a switch and only switch it on like when you hit the highway or something to keep it charged or charge when you need too, that way your charging system is not always stressed by always charging 2 batteries. Here is a link to one by the way.

You only need a high amperage isolator if you'll be running more than 1 extra battery.

Or if you got 3 amps running 900 watts each... maybe you should upgrade to something new. Memphis has their MOJO amp, 2000 watts. Requires 13.8 volts to run it, so you'd need an upgraded alt to handle the load. Or Hifonics has their new Maxximus. 10KW
my buddy got a cap online, it was 2.0 fared, i think, and it stopped his lights from blinking. i was thinking of gettin one, but maybe i'll just get a yellow top- kinda expensive though. or should i just upgrade my wiring? i got 4 ga now

I'm getting rid of one of my amps and will run all door speakers off my 4channel at 2ohms, instead of two amps to doors. Then I'm waiting for my Phoenix gold mono, 500 watts at 2 ohms. This alone shoud help relieve some stress hopefully. If I could afford to buy a 10K watt amp I'd be driving an NSX right now

I know I know. I need to upgrade mine badly. My lights don't dim at all though.

Check out this link.
It doesn't get good until Geolemon's and Nasty Torto's replies.
In my experiences caps do help, as stated. Unless your power needs are WELL over what your stock alt/battery can supply.

Gramdacious- caps are useless, but who am I to tell you...
To answer your question- you should use the cap AS YOUR DISTRIBUTION block and have your amps feeding off of it- the cap itself getting power directly from battery not a distroblock-your main fuse is more than adequate
