5th Gen headunit upgrade

I have been reading for a couple of days now and I am still not sure if I doing the right thing.

I want to install an aftermarket head unit and tweeters and leave in the speakers and sub. Is that a good idea?
I have also read that in time the amps &/or the headunit blows. How true is that?

I wanted to stay away from ripping the car apart, but the more I read the more it seems like I should just upgrade everything, but I'm low on funds.

Has anyone just swap out the head unit and tweets? If so what does it sound like, and would you recommend it?

Thanks for your input.

my entire bose sound system blew a few days ago and now getting the whole thing replaced with something of better quality! it was just a matter of time, since i've had that P.O.S. headunit replaced 5 times!

If you swap out just the tweets, then you are going to get a better high-frequency response...and that's all. If you are going to do anything, change out the HU and the speakers with a decent coaxial set. Taking the doors off is not hard at all...you can do it!!!

Be careful just changing out the tweets unless your new head unit has a xover function to keep the low freq's away from them. [I assume you will be bypassing the bose amp, but either way, I bet the signal is only x'd over at the tweets themselves - little in-line capacitors].
