HELP! Can't remove headunit from frame...(pics inside)

I am having the worst f-ing luck in the world with removing my OEM headunit. The screws highlighted in red WILL NOT screw a damn's worth. I've put every ounce of strength into it, but it's no use. I've soaked the screws in some WD-40...nothing. WTF is the problem!? This is, literally, driving me nuts. I've posted this here and in the audio forum, because I need as many replies as possible...otherwise, I'm putting everything back together and just saying f*ck it. I just can't get the OEM out of the frame. =(

These are the culprits:

Get a ratchet with a long handle and turn the screws...the longer the handle, the more torque you will have. Have 1 person hold the ratchet in-line with the screw, then turn the ratchet...it this does not work at firts, insert a hollow pipe around the ratchet body giving you a longer ratchet...the longer the handle the more torque you will have.

That is how I did it.

Work smarter, not harder dude...I PROMISE...this will work!!!!!!

slickrick Apr 26, 2005 12:58 PM

i hope that idea works because my suggestion is to drill out the screws. :)

Assassinroon Apr 26, 2005 01:03 PM

oh and if i was there my manpower could tkae those screws out lol

Unless he is using a hammer drill or a drill press, he is going to simply wind up stripping the screws...at which opint, he's fu<ked

NYPD-Arnold Apr 26, 2005 02:30 PM

I got em out. Went to my mechanics and the two of them managed to screw them out. Now I'm faced with a new f*cking problem...CD Error FO. The headunit won't open up to take in a CD.

NYghettoGLE Apr 26, 2005 04:16 PM

man, i remember when Don tried to take out the oem bose hu out of the frame.

1 of the screws was so tightly in place he literally grinded the whole screw.

y tha hell do they screw it so hard?.....

NYPD-Arnold Apr 26, 2005 04:33 PM

No clue. I'm putting the OEM back in. The 6-disc is defective, the CD bay doesn't open up.

Tony Fernandes Apr 27, 2005 02:58 AM

I realize it's too late to help you, but if it will help others...

I used a screw driver and attached a pair of vice grips to the handle to use as leverage. Then I put the stereo on its side and used ALL of my weight on top of the screw driver to keep it from slipping out and stripping the screw heads and used the vice grip handle to turn. It worked really well.

Just smack the end of the screwdriver with a hammer....bada bing

slickrick Apr 27, 2005 11:31 AM

^ hey didnt you buy my stock H/u like over a year ago?

ElVito1981 Apr 27, 2005 12:03 PM

use a drill

NYPD-Arnold Apr 27, 2005 01:42 PM

It's done. Everything back to stock. The HU was defective.

Lytheum Apr 27, 2005 09:38 PM

you can get them out easily with an impact driver for future reference

Yup, thats me. Still going strong too.

nadir_s Apr 28, 2005 10:57 PM

i had issues removing those screws too .. ended up stripping 2 of em. Just find phillips bits and get the MOST SNUG fit one.

madmxx May 2, 2005 01:37 PM

The Nissan tech who replaced my defective BOSE HU said the screws were a ***** to remove and the hardest part of the job. So even Nissan stealerships have problems.

adampecush May 7, 2005 03:32 PM

easiest way is to use a brand new screwdriver and attempt the removal on carpet so nothing turns. You gotta put all your weight into the screws, but they will break free. Once stripped however, no amount of weight will get them out, so time for the drill.

I have an old Black and Decker Versa Pack screw driver. This old thing is great. Even if the batteries are worn down, the thing has a big handle that allowed me to get a good grip on it and break the screws loose. When ever I have a hard time taking a screw off, I go and get this, it has not failed me yet :).

:topic: I know but Tony Fernandes maxima was in the cardomain magazine for his system. pretty cool. just thought i would tell you guys that

That's why I like my impact driver. It's like $28 at Sears. You just use a normal 3/8" drive phillips head socket and a hammer. Works great on any stubborn screw or bolt.

cgrubert May 8, 2005 10:07 AM

When I took mine out I ended up stripping a couple of them. Those things are in there tight, but the metal is a little soft which makes it easy to strip them. The easiest way I found to remove the stipped ones was to take a dremel and put a notch in the screw head. Then you can put a huge flat blade screwdriver in there and they come out pretty easy. I don't know why Nissan torqued them so hard, but if they are going to do that they really should use bolts...not philips head screws.

kcidmil May 8, 2005 10:14 AM

They probably have Loc-tite on them. That stuff works great... but a pain in the butt when you try pulling the screws back out.

2 Da Max May 8, 2005 10:16 AM

take a drill, it works like a charm. if not get some airtools lol

kcidmil May 8, 2005 10:40 AM

:rotz: I expected better from you. And I have a feeling the fact there's too many mods to list, is because you're dreaming of all them.

I'm sure the only reason they made them that difficult was to discourage people like us from taking the stereo out on our own. That way they can charge you bazillion dollars to fix it for you!

dreaming of what mods? what makes you think that?

crod1000 May 9, 2005 07:51 PM

Had the same problem with two of the screws and before I finally gave up, I used my dremel to cut two slots so that I could use my big flat head screwdriver. :ben: Worked like a charm, but of course after an hour of bangin my head against the wall :banghead: trying to figure out what to do.

slickrick May 9, 2005 11:07 PM

i hate it when future Auburn students ***** about nothing. :)

Unibomber May 12, 2005 02:11 PM

most of the time if you actually try to tighten it a bit more it breaks the "gatorgrip" like hold on the screw. Ive done this to 3 out of the 4 maxes in my family.

if that didnt work i got the best fitting bit, vice grips, and a family member to apply most pressure from the top while i hit the vicegrips holding the bit

slickrick May 13, 2005 11:34 PM

dude you have no clue about the coach... he will own this year you shall see.

MannyNJ2k2max May 14, 2005 06:48 AM

buahahahaha!!!!!!!! OWNED by the ****ty screws everyone else had to deal with...hehe
I had to drill mine out.

ryant35 May 19, 2005 03:28 PM

I drilled mine

The case on the stereo is very thin, so as soon as I drilled through the head, the theaded part fell right through into the stereo case. Then just open the case and retrieve the screws.http://forums.maxima.org/newreply.ph...e=1&p=3922403#

I used a drill. Broke 3 bits (the the tips literarly broke off), but finally I managed to find a strong enough bit to unscrew them. I had to however put all my weight on when screwing them out with the drill. If you don't, you will strip off the screw.

You're kidding right? You bumped a 2 year old thread for no useful information whatsoever.
