L5 Ported Box?

Alright, i have a new 12 inch solo-baric L5 with a jbl class d amp pushing 580 watts rms to it. Right now i have just your basic sealed box that i bought off of ebay for temp. storage and of course it leakes, so i want to build a box for this bad boy quick. Should i port the box or should i vent it? I want to still be able to use my trunk, but i want to get some good spl and sq. Does any one have any experience on desiging boxs? I see people tuning there boxs and i have no idea how you "tune" a box. Also is there any free software to help design this box or a low price software? I have a 2001 infiniti I30 and i replaced every thing and all i have left is the sub setup thanks

Why don't you seal up the box and see how it sounds. I bet it will sound a lot better without the leaks. Just bringing it up because it sounds like you want to keep your trunk space.

Check Kicker's website for the box plans. They use to have their recommended box diagrams in their owner manuals.

Here are some box plans from their site in Adobe Acrobat.

some peaple say the rectangle vents tune better then the round ones. i have to pa10's and i had a vented box and it sucked and when i went to buy a bandpass they would say that they are made for ported boxes i got my bandpass and they sound a lot better.

tuning is dictated by the length of the port, it's area, etc...not necessarily the size/shape of the port. too small of an opening, and you might run into issues with port noises.

bass from general bandpass boxes covers only a small frequency spectrum...and it's usually near the tuning frequency of the port. but as long as you like how it sounds...that's all that matters

If you want it to be freaking loud then port it. I got two L5s and they're sealed right now and it sounds good to me. I'm thinking about building a ported box in the summer so it can be crazy loud.

I had an L7 in a .88 cubic foot enclosure with some polyfill(I think I bought some at Walmart). I ran it with a Kicker KX600.1 that put out over 700 watts and it got plenty loud.

Go with a ported box. I have a 12"L7. The first box I got was a sealed box as you can see from the link below.

http://www.cardomain.com/memberpage/767560/2

If you go to page 3, I have a pic of my new setup and let me tell you, having the L7 in a ported box makes a huge **** difference. And I am also running the sub with a Kicker KX600.1 at 75% gain and it sounds great.

No complaints here.

Good luck!

MaximaSE2005, did you just turn up the gains to where you think they should be or adjust them for the least amount of distortion?

I just adjusted them to where there was no distortion. I think the sub could handle the full gain but I was advised that it would not be a good idea.

The gain is not a volume control. It is there to match up the output of the head unit to the amplifier. Setting this correctly will give you the best signal to noise ratio possible for your system. If you adjusted your gains properly and this was at 75%, turning them up all the way will not give you any more power out of your amp. However, you will increase the amount of distortion that your subwoofer will be seeing.

Honestly, I don't know what brand or size it is. I just know that I paid $60 for it and I got it on Canal St. in New York, N.Y.
