Question about headunit installation.

I am trying to install my headunit into my max. The first time I tried, I had power to the hu, but the no sound because of the built in amps. I am not to worried about getting the speakers to work right now. The second time, I plug all the wires right with an adapter, and now I really don't get any power to the hu, but the hu blinks or flickers on and off constantly, even when I don't turn the power on. I think it may be a fuse or some kind of short. Any suggestions will help. Thanks.

It sounds like your wiring is wrong.

If you blew a fuse the unit prolly wouldnt power up at all. If you take a picture or tell us what parts you have we can help.

I think it may be the wiring. It can't be a fuse bc I just took out my stock bose and power wise, it was fine. I am still trying to figure out how to wire it up right. I don't have wires on the hu for display lights dimming, power antenna, or amp turn on wire. All I am trying to accomplish is the power to the hu. I can easily figure out everything else. I hooked up the wires according to the diagram that came with the wiring harness. I think that a few of the wires are not right, and I tried to change it to the way it would work, but nothing happened. I guess I will have to wait til I get a hold of a multimeter. But the weird thing is, I checked all the fuses before I pluged in the hu, and they were all fine. It was pulsating on and off. Now it doesn't even do that. I have more figuring out to do I guess. Thanks.

To troubleshoot where the pulsating might be coming from I diconnected the power wire and ground. Then I connected the ground from the wires inside the car...nothing. Then I connected the power wire and only the power wire, and it started to pulsate. I tried to see if there were any more grounds from anywhere else. So I think it is either the hu or the power source. What is weird is that the hu doesn't even pulsate or blink any more. It shows that it isn't powered by anything at all. When I put the wire from the hu to a better ground on the frame, the display lite up, but it said "goodbye" like I just shut it off.

Yellow is your constant. Also a good wiring harness should allow you to match up wires perfectly. I mean the colors should be exact.

FYI
Yellow constant
Orange illumination
Blue with white stripe is Antenna
Red ignition

The others are usually speakers FR FL RR RL type of thing.

make sure your ground is attached to either the body of the car or the cig lighter, this will make sure your head unit will turn on when the 12v constant (yellow) and acc (red) is connected. its got 2 be your ground. However if you have a bose system make sure you got the right wire harness best to check crutchfeild.com for the correct harness that you need for ur bose.

for sound

you will have to connect the "blue" remote wire to the bose turn on lead as you would a aftermarket amp so that the bose will turn on with your HU...

on that note for sound you would need all blues to be connected together to have sound and a good reception from the radio itself.

There is a problem with that bc I don't have a illumiation wire on my hu. It's not a cheap hu, just at least over a year or two old.

you dont have too use the illumination wire. i didnt. but i was told when i bought my wire harness for the install that i had too make a new ground, that the one supplied, coming out of the harness does not work. theres plenty of bare metal back there too make its own ground, sounds like a fishy problem... might be ghetto, but ive hooked a few HUs up at the battery directly, twist the red and yellow 2gether and it goes too the positive and the ground goes too the ground, it should work now.... will tell ya if its the head unit and or bad wires in the back of the dash somewhere. perhaps slight riggin lol but i do it, cause i know the power and grounds are good there. a brief test.

After I read this, I went back to the car and hooked up a better ground and... it worked. Thanks for the help. If I would have done it in the first place, I would not have asked for help. Thanks alot to you and everyone else!
