custom trunk and full system revamp worklog *pics*

well it was nice out and I figure its about time to get started on my system that i HAVENT HAD for months, driving was getting a bit boring. anyway, thanks to Don, i've got rainbow slc 265 components. the tweeters were flushmounted in the doors, and all 4 doors were dampened with cascade.

the trunk was left up to me, i did it with 6 sheets of stinger expert roadkill.

today i took the opportunity to rewire the car with upgraded 1/0 power wire from knukonceptz (was using 4gauge previously), as well as clean up some other random wiring stuff

let the pics speak for themselves. I will keep this thread as a worklog to show my progress.
http://www.eden.rutgers.edu/~nbalani/trunk%20worklog/

btw. im too lazy to resize the pics so I just linked to the folder. theyre about 1 mb each, so 56K, good luck

comments are welcome, both good and bad.

looks good so far, how much did the roadkill cost you to do the whole trunk?

cant wait to start playing with mdf.

does anyone know what the height is from the top of the spare tire post to be level with the trunk floor?

OK I know its been like a MONTH but I've made some progress.

The general idea behind this setup was to keep it clean, somewhat showy, but most especially, extremely versatile and PRACTICAL. So instead of making a false floor with the entire floor as MDF, I did something a little different. The old cardboard in the trunk was sagging and not proving to be very sturdy. Keeping weight in mind, I cut a piece of 1/2" MDF the EXACT shape of the spare tire well. For 5th Genners, it is a 13.5" radius from the spare tire mounting post, with the top right corner at a right angle. I used a CD as a template to round off that corner, and VOILA it fit perfectly. I then cut a square hole in the center. Each side of the square was about 3.5" if i recall correctly. Next I constructed a small box about 2-3 inches in DEPTH and mounted it underneath the MDF floor. The underside of the box rests on top of the spare tire, and the big white screw goes through the box to hold the tire down, as well as stabilize the floor. The entire thing was simply carpeted with black speaker box carpet. On to the pics:

*I apologize for the SLOW Rutgers Server*

http://www.eden.rutgers.edu/~nbalani...g/CIMG1006.JPG

I've also gotten rid of my AVN 2454 and upgraded to the AVN 5435.
I covered the gap above the AVN with some ABS plastic.

Onto building the false walls, sub box and amp rack. Pics hopefully by the end of the week. Thanks in advance for comments, both good and bad, and feel free to ask any questions.

VERY easy - unscrew that white bolt/plate and lift out the board - its pretty light, like maybe 7 lbs

What kind of cascade did you use & how much? Was it the VB2 or VB2HD by chance?

Thanks and good work.

OK then, VB2MAX. It was the last available so I just scooped it up...
False walls on tuesday, stay tuned.

Also, I failed to mention that I initially used hot glue to hold the ABS plastic behind the GXE trim, however that did not fair well in this heat. Right now the "527 multi-purpose cement" is drying/curing.

Rainbow SLC 265 Components
Arc Kar 400.4 -> bridged to comps for now, will be powering rears as well, whenever I order those rears
Arc Kar 900.1D ->Arc Kar 12D subwoofer

SQ was my main priority. I want it to be crisp, loud and clean. As mentioned before, clean install makes it all that much nicer.

False wall on the left side = amp rack

False wall on the right side = sub box.

Everything will be flushmounted. If I could have found matching speaker carpet it would look OEM, but I'm just using black. So it will look nicer than just a standalone box in the middle of the trunk, but definitely not "blinging" to show quality standards, but rather, subtle and effective.

Nice, that's what I was thinking of using on my doors.

and if I may ask, how much sq. footage did you use on the doors. I just wanna get a rough estimate as to how much I should get.

Thanks again & keep up the excellent work

9 packs of VB2MAX = roughly 45 square feet. About 10+ feet per door. It goes quick.

I must bestow all dampening credit on the doors to our audio guru Don...he does very clean work. I will also post pics of his flushmount tweeter work in my doors.

Out of the 9 sheets of dampening that comes in a stinger roadkill pack, I used 7 of them when I dampened the trunk. I don't know the total square footage of a pack, but whatever it is, take 7/9ths of it and thats square footage used for the trunk.

OKKK - I went up to my roommate's place in Whippany to get started on the amp rack and box. The idea was to make false walls and flushmount amps and sub on left and right side of the trunk. As we got building the plans changed.

The sub box we made added up to about .78 cuft...but for some reason it just did not sound right. Sounded like it was bottoming out, so I scrapped the idea and just got a prefab 1cuft. With the help of Don we recarpeted it in matching black to my amp rack.

The results:

starting from 1192 onwards are the newest pics. Feel free to check out that entire folder to see the entire worklog.
Comments and questions are welcome, both good and bad.

Ill start with my own: it sounds great!

Thanks all, keep 'em comin...

Red switch is for rear view camera in the keyhole...I used the aux input in the AVN for that, and have the flushmount RCA's on the right side of the dash too, I use it for Ipod...

Don's just looking for a free plug - Yes, he did the flushmount tweets with EASE.
BTW dude, Ravi (MacAlert01) has been trying to reach you for a while...

They don't. You had to look for the flushmount rings and I remember you said they came with some other Rainbow model.

Thanks much dude!

I'm happy to say with GREAT relief that for ONCE, with the exception of throwing the trunk liners back in, one aspect of my car is DONE. I'm very happy with the way everything came out, and won't be dabbling in this for a decent while....
