ID Max subs

OK well i put my ID max subs in my old box which was 1.30 cubic feet of airspace per sub. i put about a whole bag of poly fill into each part of the sub box, i was out in a parking lot showing my friends and the subs makes a very odd noise when it hits. it doesnt sound blown or ne thing. it just sounds like cone noise. inside the car it is crystal clear. is there a possibility that i may have over filled the box with polyfil? I dont want to cause any damage to the subs as they were expensive as hell. BTW they are 2 12" IDmax D4V3 pushed by 2 alpine mrv-1005 1000 watts RMS@2 ohms. so its one of those amps to each sub. thanks guys

is it like a tinsel slap noise? like the voice coils hitting the cone? i doubt that on an id sub.

just pull out some of the pollyfill and listen to it, how much exactly did you put in? 1 bag should fit 1.30

If you made the boxes with 1.3 cu ft (which is exactly what ID recommends) then you don't need any poly fill at all. I'd take it all out. The boxes aren't ported, right?

You say it sounds great inside the car and your only problem is what it sounds like outside? Did I understand that correctly? Who cares what it sounds like outside?

BTW. That should be one HELL of a sub system you have there. I can't even imagine it. I have a single IDMAX 10 in a sealed box with a 1200 watt amp and the volume and SQ are incredible.

I love my Id's they are rediculous...its when i open the trunk and hear the subs they just sound funny. inside the cabbin sounds second to none. plays the best drums and has the best SQ i have ever heard, LOUD and CLEAR. one of my DLS iridium tweeters just stopped working so i had to send that out. i temporarily have Diamond S600 components in the front and they wail too. not as SQ orientented as my DLS but for the money i couldnt beat it. now for project sound deadner 2005 not going quite as much all out as metal max but kinda close...300 SQ feet of deadening here i come. oh and BTW the boxes are not ported...sealed all the way..i will take out that poly fill in a couple hours when i wont wake up my neighborhood.

ok well i took our the poly fill and the subs still make that funny noise..right where the copperwire thing goes in and out...dont laugh i dont know what its called. it looks like its rubbing on the inside of the magnet a little bit which seems like thats is where the noise is coming from. what could this be?

play it free air at low volumes...see if the wires going into the magnet area is slapping against the cone. you can buy some felt pads at a crafts store and glue them to the underside of the cone where it hits.

but pics would help.

I had some tinsel snap with one of my old IDMAX's, don't remember whether it was the v.1 or v.2 that I owned. I've owned them all. And like you, in this case, I could only hear it in the trunk. so yes, it is possible that the almighty IDMAX may have tinsel slap.

Nice subs IMO, but of course I'm pretty biased. I do personally like them in a larger enclosure than the recommended (in a Maxima for sure, if not in every car). The tonality of the sub (IMO) is excellent, great for blending in with a solid front stage. but a larger enclosure will help that bottom bottom bottom end (think around subsonic level, the end of the Superman theme ) that the IDMAX just doesn't hit in a 1.3. shouldn't effect day to day music, but I like to know it's there and of course wanna score well in comps. 1.5-1.6 to IB for me. Great sub though....
