Oh No! Atlas 15 Problems

I was playing my Atlas 15 and left it going. Came back a couple minutes later and it's completely dead. The amp still has power. I don't know what it could be. I don't know what else to say...

Were you playing it at a moderate level or above? Where did you go?
What amp are you running? Has this ever happened before?

A common occurence is the wire coming off the speaker inside the box. If that is the case try soldering it on. You can easily check your sub with a meter or battery (AA, 9V). Take your meter and test for continuity or impedance at the speaker leads. Or take the battery and quickly touch the speaker wires coming from the speaker. You should hear a slight pop and the cone should move forward or backwards depending on polarity.

Thanks for the replies.

It was loud, but not distorded loud. I left it going to look at someone else's Maxima. I have a Profile 1000A Amp or something like that. It has never happend before.

Yea, I did smell something. Filled the trunk pretty good. I can't explain it or even know what it was. If i push gently on the cone it won't go down (with the sub disconnected), however I can push it up from the back.

I'll check that...

All the speaker wires are connected. THanks for the information, I will try that.

Bases on the information I just gave, what is wrong. WTF, I hope the Atlas isn't broken.

Damaged voicecoil. Generally caused by distortion. When you listen to your system loud over long periods of time your hearing begins to fade. Like coming out of a concert and your ears feel muffled. Same thing happens in your car. Your system begins to sound lower than it was 30 minutes ago but it really is not. Your hearing is a bit impaired temporarily. Most people will turn up the volume. Well at some point the signal will begin to distort as you turn it up but you can't hear it distorting. This causes the voicecoil to move side to side vs up and down. This causes rubbing. Rubbing = Heat. Heat = a damaged voicecoil. Eventually it will cease to play.

Thanks for the reply. When do you think it will start working again? Or what can I do to repair the voice coil? I'll turn down the bass boost and shyt Sunny.

If you can't push it in from the front, you have most likely caused the voice coil to jump the gap. Meaning it's sitting on the face of the motor assembly. Time for a recone, or a new sub.

Is there anyway for me to fix the voice coil by myself?

You will need to know how to recone a sub. The voice coil in now damaged. If you realign it and try and use it, you will hear the scratching sound everyone is talking about. It will no longer play music b/c cone movement is inhibited. This is the copper wound voice coil scraping against the walls of the motor in the gap. If you think you can recone or want to give it a try, just call the manufacturer and see if you can get a kit. My opinion is to recone or replace depending on the cost of the recone/replace.

Don't take it too hard. I have blown many subs in my day. Fortunately they were all under warranty and were replaced. Is your sub under warranty? That may be a possible route as well.

no warranty for customer misuse... a blown coil= bass boost= you should be happy its only $50 to pretty much get a brand new sub.

What really makes me mad is that Sunny was right AND I paid $175 shipped for my Atlas 15 and a week later the price went down to $105 without shipping. I should still have a warranty. It really wasn't misuse, it was a dyckhead who didn't know what he was doing.

It's Chad's fault because he sells ghey audio equipment. HAHAHA I'm just kidding. I knew it was my fault. How could it blow so quickly and easily? I'm mad the sub is retired right now, but it's the least of my problems...

Thanks for all the help guys!

Aaron

HAHAHA That's funny, I thought Sunny was actually smart??

bass boost = teh devil....

But you cannot deny its user error....

I blew a Rubi lat year (thank goodness for warranty) with a bass boost accident of my own- i turned the ****, i'm to blame...but on the avg carefully set, nothing wrong with adding a db here or there, but keep it on the minimal side. I didnt blow a coil, i blew the motor-it was locked and you couldn't move the suspension/cone back and forth at all-like a concrete wall...live and learn.

So, if the Gain is at 75%, that's all the juice I'm going to be pumping through the Atlas. It can push out more bass than that...

Wait wait...your gain was at 75% with bass boost up on a Profile "1000A" amp? And you are surprised you blew your sub? Time to upgrade your amp my friend.

Theyre not bad for a low end amp, especially for the price. But its still Profile, and more gain = more distortion.

You can use bassboost just don't turn it up all the way, and make sure you re-adjust your gain to match it

I have my bass boost all the way up, but my gain is set to almost 1/5th or so. It sounds awesome, and I've never had a problem with the settings or subs blowing out on me.... Just curious what the reasons are for not using it.
