Suggest me some components!

I ended up blowing out my tweeters because I set my cross overslope too low on my radio. I'm looking for some new components now. My mid ranges are in good shape and have a very nice warm sound to them, so I'm kinda bummed about having to replace them.

tweeters: polk audio db3000
front mids: polk db 6510
rear mids: polk db5510
hu: eclipse cd8454
sub: image dynamics idq10
amps: eclipse pa5422 (85 x 4 powering front tweeters and rear mids) & eclipse5532 (bridged 130w to front mids, 270w to sub.)

fyi, these polks are not the current ones, these are their top of the line models about 3-4 years ago before they went to the crappy dx/ex, then finally jumping up with the momo line.

I'm thinking of going with the polk mmc6500 speakers. They retail for $300, but can be found for much less. I'm going to set a budget of maximum of $300. What if I were to just replace the tweeters? Anyone know any good tweeters which work well with other brands of speakers?

In an active setup, you can typically use any tweeters that suit your tastes.

Of course Rainbow CAL25s and up do it for me.

Yeah, I plan to run an active setup...this time I'll be more careful when setting the xover slope.

Anyone have any other suggestions? I'll look into the Rainbow CAL25's. Thanks for the suggestion.

I sorta need to make a decision soon as I have already bought the polk speakers and I have until this saturday to return them if I decide not to use them.

Tweeters will be going in the stock location of the a-pillars.

Here's the active cross over setup on my hu:
slopes: 0, 6, 12, 18, 24 db

Freqs:

Hi / M-LPF:
200, 250, 315, 400, 500, 630, 800, 1000, 1250, 1600, 200, 2500, 3150, 4000, 5000, 6300, 8000, 10000

M-HPF / Low:
63, 80, 100, 125, 160, 200
Will I be able to find an ideal configuration with the cal25's? I ended up messing up my old tweeters by running them at 5khz with a 6db slope.

Anyone have any other suggestions? Looking for something warm.

I went and bought some cal 25's. Just wondering if they have any break in period. They sound almost the same as the polks they replaced, just less harsh. Currently the xover is at 3150hz @ 18db. Am I safe to go down to 2500hz at 24db?

You should be able to go down to about 2.5Khz without problems. In fact I believe thats what the passives are set at.

Manual says 3000hz at the freq, then 1 x 12db, 1 x 18db for the slope.

Tweets are mounted in the factory A pillar location. I put them in the flush mount cup, apply some foam weather stripping around the end of the tweeters, then duck tape them to the a pillars lastly applying some more weather stripping to the back to prevent rattling.

I have personally run them down to 2.4 with no issues.

Also try reversing the polarity on the tweets to compensate for the distance.

6db/octave slope on a tweeter

Better be more careful with those cal25's they don't like alot of power with a low x-over point....

Heh, I'm still learning here. At that time, I thought as long as I had the freq above the xover freq, the slope didn't matter as long as it wasn't 0. These polks held up pretty well. I plan on wiring them up when I have a full day to kill and do a proper comparison between these two. I think the polk xover was at 4800 (that or 3600) @ 12db for the tweeter. Not 100% sure.

Right now the cals are reverse wired at 2500hz @ 24db slope. They sound better now. I hope thats alright. The passive xover had them at 3000hz at 18db.

I decided to try the polks again. I have them at 10khz at a 6db slope. I like the linearity of the sound, but the polks are a bit harsh on the upper end (dunno if that is how they naturally are or if I screwed them up). Figured it wouldn't hurt to experiment a bit with these speakers. I was wondering, is it safe to run the cal 25's at 10khz at 6db?

The polks still have the minor distortion which is why I decided to replace them with the cals. However, at the 99.9% freqs that they aren't distorting, they blend in better with my midranges. I called up polk and I have a set of polk replacements in the mail now. Going to try those out.

They have only been used for a month. Set at 2.5khz, 3.15khz at 24/18db respectively. I bought a component system to get these tweets, so I have the entire component system for sale now. I bought these from a VERY reputable seller.

Those are what I ended up going with. They are the tweeters to Polk's SR component systems. Yes, I think that is a phase plug on the tweeters. The highs on these are incredible. To me, these sound better than the rainbows I had. It could be because I am running old school polk db mids and I get better blending, I dont know. But they definintly sounded as great if not better than now I remember my old DB tweeters (the speakers which put polk on the map 5-6 years ago before they ruined it with dx, ex, & gnx lines).
