Components

Im about to be bying some components and I have about $200-300 to spend, just wanted to know what you guys recommend and where I can buy them for a good price. Also, I was just going to get one set of components for the front...theres no point putting components in the rear right? I kinda got that feeling being on the org. If you guys could also say where the best place to mount them would be and what amp to run that would be helpful. Thanks.

I read your other post about running the 2 12s. If you change amps you could possilby use the Quart to run your components (turn gain all the way down if necessary please ) I am biased to Mb Quart reference series because that was the first quality set I had and I just love the sound of them. No doubt there is better stuff on the market, but for the money, they are worth their weight in gold. Try reference series, or premiums.

For placement, best thing to do is keep reading about imaging and about fiberglassing. Then you can make yourself a set of kickpanels, they will give pretty good imaging from that area. I'm working on some kicks and have my tweeters glassed into the a pillars.

Someone else can chime in about what components to get. I spent about $140 on my Rainbow SLC's which I love, however you can probably get a better set for your budget.

But yes, no need whatsoever for components in the rear. A set of good coaxials will be fine.

The Memphis look nice but it looks like they are able to handle just 50 watts. I kinda wanted something with a little better power handling. On a side note, is there a write up on how to install some MDF Rings, I was thinking of doing this all I kcould find was pics and why I should do it when I search. Are you having any deals on some items Id be interested in Don? I live in Casper, WY i hope you could ship.

that's 50watts RMS... that's what it takes just to run the suckers. They'll handle 100 watts.

You dont like the MB Quarts, can I ask why? Im not to familiar with speakers but the specs on the Qline look alot better than anything else Ive been lookin at. Im thinking about getting those and there about $540, anything better in that price range? What type of amp would I use? Thanks for the replies.

In that price range there is much better! The MB Quarts are way to harsh I owned a set of premium line MB's and the tweeter was just brutal at high volumes. Look at the Rainbow Profi's they are an excelent speaker and will blow the Q line's away!

Most people that say they are too harsh don't even know there is an attenuation on the crossover for the tweeter , I have mine on -3db. Also the doming makes a difference, anything soft dome would be "less harsh" if that's what you are looking for.

I worked with my installer with them and did some pretty extensive tuning and still found them to be a bit harsh. As for my Profis right out of the box they sounded awesome! I have done a little tuning on them since install but they still but the MB's to shame. The midbass on them is phenominal as well tons more than my MB's and I have the kickbass version which only plays down to 80hz. You can def find better in that price range thats what I was trying to get at.

An attentuator does just that, attentuates (raises or lowers volume) has absolutely Nothing to do with the sound.

I still havent decide on a setup, Thsi is really hard, dont want to dump money and be unhappy with the results you know...I need to make a decision soon though because within the next couple weeks I was going to be installing all my new sound deadening(already have doors and trunk done with Dynamat Extreme, but I will be doin a second and third layer with 120sq ft of Deamplifier and 5 Gallons of sludge, and then puttin 120 sq ft of Overkill over the sludge, im really excited). Anyway Im tearin out carpet, console, and door panels and just want to replace everything at once. If I do decide with Rainbow, Memphis, or Focal where can I buy over the net, I have no dealer close to me.

Get with don PearlMax above. Personally, i would have to say that the quartz regardless of attenuation have NEVER been described as having a warm tweeter. The sound has always been harsh, and while the mid is decent I would have to say lean toward the rainbows out of the two.
Some other choices that you could go with would be USD Waveguides if you want to be unconventional ( Had a set in my last car with the 8 inch mid), were beautiful perfect sound, imaging once we got em set up properly, and a pink xover...well that was a downside...but ended up trading them for two xtant amps and a set of mbs... Was very disappointed with the speakers but the amp that i kept held up for a long time.

I would recommmend that you try and find a shop local to you (Hell even if you have to drive a ways) and audition as much of YOUR music on their in store systems as you can. Write down, what you like about each setup, what you dont, that will make it easier to kind of place you as far as what you like in comparison to I have Boston Acoustics, get them. Itll make you more a part of the deciding process and give don something substantial to work with.

Personally i like my polk momo mids with seas tweeters lol and i auditioned about 8 sets before settling (Kicker RMB6s, Diamonds, Eclipse, Infinity, Momox2, Infinity coax,Boston Rallies), i personally in the stock locations like the momos and am working on a set of glassed doorpods to fit an 8 so i can be just like don, and should have my kicks done by the first.

Call up Focal directly. Toll Free: 888-340-4403

And if you're that worried about price on the Memphis Components, they do have a multisync setup that is cheaper.
