oh, so your box is ported. i wouldn't worry about the box being a little bigger. just set your gains and ssf levels correctly, you shouldn't run into any problems. looks good

well since i'm new to the ported world, please help me understand the ssf levels. i have had the freq set since i got the amp, is that a different setting? if it is different, how would i determine what the ssf should be set at.

also, i have gain turned all the way down and the bass boost turned up a little bit. should i have the bass boost all the way down and have the gain up instead?

it needs to say SSF or subsonic filter on the amp. frequency is the low pass filter if its a subwoofer amp. get rid of that bass boost.

Ok, well it turns out that i never had the bass boost up. i have the level (gain) up a tad bit but not much at all. the ssf was ont he whole time. it ranges from 20-50. right now its set at 40. i'm assuming that means it will cut out the freq if its below 40. does that sound ok?

btw, just took it for a spin because i live in a small quiet neighborhood, and it sounds awesome! a song that used to only cause a few small rattles that i could just turn it up and not hear anymore, now rattles everything, even in the front pillars.

it all depends on wha tthe box is tuned to. you should find out. but how much power are you sending it?

a subsonic filter just limits any frequency the sub will play that is lower than what you have the filter set to. usually the ssf is set to near the tuning frequency of the ported box. the filter is there to protect the sub from over excursion, since the sub is basically free-aired below tuning freq of the box.

well i bought the sub because i wanted it to be powered at 2 ohms, it is a dual 4ohm woofer. i have it wired for as a 2 ohm load. my amplifier claims to be producing 800 watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms. the sub can handle 500 watts RMS 1500 watts peak. i doubt i am producing close to 800 watts becuase i was just running a single Kicker Comp VR of the same amp and it is rated at less RMS and was fine. i can find out what the box was tuned for but i can't remember the manufacturers name off the top of my head.

yeah find out. as a general rule i like 25-30hz as a setting unless the box is tuned real low which I HIGHLY doubt. most likely close to 40hz.

The one thing I didn't like about this sub was that it sounded very inconcsitant to me. I don't know what it was, but my old setup that I had definately sounded better to me...

I can't post this in my own thread yet so...

I was thinking about getting 2 12" Alpine type R's to replace my current subs (2 12" Rockford P3's). I was wondering how much of a difference between these subs I would be able to see, and what type of amp I should get to power them. Or should I go with an entirely different sub instead ?

You should check out www.thecaraudiobox.com . There Type-R enclosures have started a lot of hype on caraudio.com. I know you already have an enclosure, but just thought u might want to check them out.

Last set-up was one 10" sealed rockford hx2 powered by an Alpine V12. Mounted in the rear driver 1/4 panel area of the trunk. Then I went to two sealed 10" Alpine type R's powered by an MTX 2400x. Hx2 was alot more consistant.

Transfer function would have something to do with it. You had the 1 10 firing from left to right where as the 2 10s are now firing straight back. You'll have to experiment with box placement to get it to your liking. You may have to move them closer to the back of the car.

hx2's were the better subs a while ago...they had great spl, and since they were dual voicoil and ranged from the 3312 to the 2212 (depending on the model they produced 500/1000 watts nominal) Dr. Max here on the org has 1 hx2 tuned perfectly in a ideal box, and it hits so hard my nose hairs vibrate.

I have heard nice things about the overall output from the 05' Type-R 12's. I think it might do better in a bigger box though.

they do indeed need bigger enclosures than the previous version for ported applications. i would still never ever pimp them simply because of the blasphemy at CA.com. 150+ db with a single type r lol
