System install help/info needed

I have an Image Dynamics Idmax 12 V.3 D2 and getting an Orion 1200d amp.

http://www.imagedynamicsusa.com/tec...pe=sub&id=idmax

http://www.orioncaraudio.com/amps/Dmono.asp

1.) The sealed box and speaker are separate, so I will need to wire the coilovers to the box connector, so what size wire should I use and how should I wire it? (again, assuming sealed box and Orion 1200d amp)

2.) A general question, the amp says it runs..

RMS Power at 4 Ohms 425 W x 1

RMS Power at 2 Ohms 725 W x 1

and looking at the specs from the speaker it says the speakers impendence is 1/4. What does this mean in general and how will I need to setup the amp? 725 @ 2 or 425 @ 4?

Any info, help or general information about this system or amps/subs in general is much appreciated!!!

Your Image Dynamics link doesnt work.

Assuming your amp isnt 1 ohm stable, wire it like that 2nd diagram, and the amp will see a 4 ohm load, so the sub will see 425 RMS.

the impedence 1/4 means that you can wire the sub to be 1ohm or 4ohm load. The big question is your amp 1ohm stable if not you will wire it as the 4ohm load

Hey, thanks for all the help so far guys....the amp specs says it's 1 ohm stable (according to the link provided in my first post), but it's at 1200 rms, which is over my speakers capacity. Soo, I guess the only/best way to wire it, is as a 4 ohm load, is this correct?

The IDmax will take that 1200w with no problem.Wire it to 1ohm and set the gains on the amp no more than 3/4 and watch the bass boost..

hehe...i am a firm believer that you can never put too much power on a sub! hehe...actually, funny story, so i had one of those $50 walmart setups back in high school...like the 2 6" subs in a box with the glowing neon rings...you all know what im talking about! anyway...i hooked them up to my kicker 1250.1 sub....those lil things actually pounded for like 15-20 mins...and then i turned the boost up and the volume up...they pounded harder than i woulda believed...and then started on fire. good times!

Do I wire it like the figure above shows, for a 1 ohm load? The only reason I ask is because the diagram says it's for a 2 Ohm DVC speaker and the IDMAX is a 1/4 Ohm speaker.

1/4 means that it can be wired to 1 ohm OR 4 ohms. You want to go with the 1 ohm setup. The first diagram. Someone already mentioned that it was either 1 ohm or 4 ohm in the two possible wiring options.

Sounds good, just one more n00b question and I'll be ready to go....

What gauge wire should I used to wire the speaker in the box?

Yeah follow the diagram to wire your sub to 1 ohm. You'll be fine with power if you are careful with gains.

Size of speaker wires doesn't matter as much as many would think. You'd be fine with pretty much any speaker wire, but some of us like to use big speaker wire for show, and maybe for an extra watt or two that you'll never hear. Go for whatever 16, 14, or 12 gauge you have around. ....

Nice sub.

I wouldn't go lower than 12 gauge with the amount of power that you can send through that, I've seen the ends of my wires burned when using 16/14 in high power situations but that is after years and years of use, I don't know exactly what caused it but just to be on the safe side I'd go with 12 gauge.

Yeah I guess why not be better safe than sorry being that speaker wire is so cheap. You will not notice a gain in volume with the larger speaker wire, and I don't see why ends would burn, but sure, better safe than sorry....
