Upgrading my speakers

So im buying my maxi an xmas present around new year's time, and i think i need speakers. So far, my system consists of stock non bose cd player headunit, stock speakers, http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1099396976115, and http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage....=1087342241703

I have the subs turned down on the amp, so the bass is really clean and its enough for me to enjoy. My speakers are complete **** though. They squeak when i turn the volume past half way, and rattle when i turn the bass **** even a little bit.
Im looking for some speakers that sound good and can handle some power. I wouldnt mind tweaters also, but I don't know if my price range will allow for that to happen. Im planning on spending no more than 160 bucks on the 4 speakers. I do install myself, so i dont need to worry about that.
I WOULD get a new headunit, but i have a feeling my stock speakers are blown and a new headunit won't do any good, so i'll get a new headunit in a few months. What speaker combo would you pro's recommend for under 160 bucks?

Good luck at that price range. If you get lucky you might find a good deal on Parts express or something like that. At one time they had mb quart 6.5's $45 shipped.

I MIGHT be getting rid of MY Eclipse 8362 6.5 inch componenets soon. It'll cost you your budget pretty much and it's only 2 but it's a good set of 2...

And really that's all you need. A solid front stage, no real need for rear fill. There you go, problem solved m

There are a bunch of speaker combo's on crutchfield.com for about 80 bucks for a pair, i dont know why you guys are saying that it'll be hard to get into my 160 dollar budget.
Here is the page:
http://www.crutchfield.com/S-XTkYUuB...?g=52000&avf=Y

I just need to know which models of those are good because i dont know jack **** about speakers. I'll prolly end up buying the models you guys recommend on Ebay.

well we're not saying it's impossible. you said you wouldn't mind tweeters as well. For components a decent set will run you about what your budget is on average. The speakers on there that are 80 are coaxials, there's a big difference between those and a good set of components. We're just telling you what the best bang for your buck would be...and a good set of components up front is definitely a good thing and i'm not saying this to just sell you mine, i haven't even decided if i'm selling them yet, i may beep them for a 5.1 set up in my car.

Ok, i see what you're saying now.

So what speakers wihtout tweeters would you recomend? I'd rather get 4 new speakers than only have new front ones.

I would get the best speakers I could afford for the front. A little later you can get some coaxials for rear fill.

If you want to keep in your budget just go to Wal-Mart and pick up two sets of 6.5 pioneer coax's they're only like $59 a pair. Problem solved, and no need to get them through ebay w/o warranty.

How important is it to power the rear speakers? I will be upgrading my fronts asap and I am not sure if I should get a 2ch or 4ch amp.

you can amp the rear if you wish (which is not needed imo). but for my current setup in the 3rd gen, i have the head unit powering my rears, and a 2 channel amp powering my fronts.

Wouldnt that cause the front speakers to be louder than the rear, therefore messing up the surround sound effect?

that's the point heh, I prefer most of the sound coming from the front (as in a concert). the rear speakers is just there to provide some rear fill, and to please my rear passengers

Just wanted to put in my 2-cents. If you go into shops, don't tell them u don't know anything about car audio stuff, that only puts a smile on the sales person's face...if get my drift. Try to listen to the speakers and consider the type of music you listen to and stick with your budget. sorry, hope i dont sound like im preachin or anything.

just my .02...

you can get a decent set of components for your front and a decent coaxial for the rear fill within your budget. Take a look at http://www.ikesound.com/product-product_id/2828 DECENT component set (i.e. not the best but probably just what you are looking for). Use the left over $40 bucks a cop a pair of these http://www.ikesound.com/product-product_id/2676 (assuming that's the size you're looking for)...total price $165 .

In general, look at components (pioneer, alpine, infinity <== all have decent stuff in your price range) for the front and coaxials from either three for the rear. The best advice is to go and listen to ALOT of speakers...that's the only way to know for sure what YOU like. Good Luck!

Oh yea....I agree w/ the stay away from BB comment....and as far as the Duals you bought..well.....that's wasted $ IMO.

completely lost track of the thread, my bad

About the negative comments on my subs....theyre not half as bad as some of you make them out to be. I don't like EXTREME bass, i just want decent bass, so i turn the gain on the amp down a lot, and it sounds just how i want. Sure i would love to get some expensive subs and amps, but this is the best i can afford.

I30 boogie, thanks for the links, i'll look around on that site for a while, they seem to have good prices.

You guys need to understand that im not looking for perfect show quality sound simply because i dont have money for it, and wont have money for it in the next 5 years. I just want to upgrade my stock system so it doesnt squeak and rattle, and i'll be happy.

My comment was intended to offend you. I am familiar with the product and my 17+years of this proffesion tells me what I posted is accurate.

Whats important here is that You like it, regardless of what I or anyone else says.

Ok...i think you are misunderstanding what people are saying. I definitely hear you on "you bought what you could afford"...but the question is "could you have gotten better quality for your money?"..and the answer to that is YES. For the same $130 you could pick up 2 lower line Pioneer or even Alpine subs that will last longer and give you a better sound than the Duals. Or even better -since you don't want EXTREME bass (as you call it) - you could go with one mid-level 10 or 12 in a better setup (which would probably be the best route for you given what you have told us thus far). So, all I am saying is that you should be more selective, shop around, ask questions, and avoid the large retailers like Best Buy and CC when it comes to car audio. Chances are if a price is too good to be true....something's wrong...and in this case..the "wrong" was the product.

BTW - I am not just ******* Dual as a brand...I actually tried a set that a friend gave me.....proabably the worst sub I ever heard and took a dump after about an hour. Also, I'm not just pushing expensive brands ...I'm running 2 MA Audio 12sy's in my car now and I love em....if you ask on this forum the majority of people will tell you the avoid MA Audio. So, from an objective point of view...I think you got shafted.

I highly doubt i'd be able to get 2 pioneer or alpine subs, box, and amp for 130 bucks, but whats done is done, i cant return these and i dont plan on changing them anytime soon. They sound bad when im up really close to them in the trunk, but in the cabin it sounds clean. Some notes are messed up, but im expecting that with most subs i think.

About the speakers, i'll keep checking things out and looking on different sites, and stop by WalMart to check the model speakers they have and look them up on the net. Thanks for helping the audio noob!
