2003 Max, how do i get this set up, need experience!
i have a 2003 max with no bose. I want to know where i can get a set up like this: i want a new head unit with an ipod hookup and something that allows me to continue using my radio controls. And replace the speakers.
Does anyone know the best place to go for this, some places that i can think of are best buy(they cant keep wheel controls), a local audio/performance shop and place called autosound that does security and sound. I can give up the audio controls if there isnt anything out there (i know crutchfield has something but im not confident about it) but i dont know a good instalation kit. Best buy was good for my other cars but should i take the max to a better shop?
The perfect response would be from a 2003 owner who has done this setup or similar and could tell me where they went and what parts they used. Thanks

Ipod hookup: Kenwood, Alpine, and Eclipse have direct Ipod hookups where you can control the Ipod through the radio. Id go with Eclipse.
Steering wheel controls: Theres a couple ways to go. Theres the universal PAC SWI-X, which doesnt work as well since its infrared. It has a delay and it sensitive to where you mount the infrared eye. Option 2: You can buy an Alpine, Eclipse, or Kenwood that has a wired remote input, which would let you hardwire a steering wheel control interface to the back of the radio, with an additional adapter from PAC. Option 3: You can wait til 06 Eclipse radios come out in 2 months, which have the ability to wire up steering wheel controls directly, and you teach the deck so it learns what buttons are what. This is the best option.
Go with whatever shop whree you feel comfortable. Being that I work at Circuit City...its hit and miss with large shops like us and BB. Go into some local shops and start BSing with guys there. Talk to the installers and ask how long theyve been in the 12 volt industry. Ask around locally, or post in your regional forum here on the org, and see if you can get any recommendations, because thats the best route. I know the only people that touch my car, other than the dealership doing warranty work, are people I know personally and have seen their work.
Speakers: Theres a million options. If you plan on going with component speakers up front (separate tweeter in the pillar), you should look into an amp to power all 4 speakers. Component speakers will need the extra power, and youll get a lot more clarity overall anyway. Drive to as many places as possible with a cd of your choice that you know very well and know how it should sound, and listen to different speakers to get an idea of what you like.
Dash kit: A couple options here as well. The best one is the GXE kit, which will run you ~90 bucks, but will make the deck look factory. Heres the difference.
GXE kit: keep in mind youll have a pocket instead of a radio and a separate EQ like in this pic.

Dont go to Best Buy. I was wrkng on a friends car who had a HU installed and damm they did a ****y job. Some wires were only twisted and taped around. I would go to a shop where I see true custom wrk done. Those shops usualy wrk clean.
