I have a couple questions for you guys here. I have a Kenwood MP528 HU with stock speakers (non-bose). Pretty much all my speakers are blown now except for the drivers door. I have the back two unplugged because u can stick your finger through the cone.

I am wanting to get four new speakers for my car but I don't want to drop a lot of money into it. I would say the budget would be $160. I want something with decent base, that can be run from my HU. I know they will not sound as good as amplified speakers but I do not want to get an amp. I have been looking at the Infinity 6012i speakers. I hear that they produce overall good mids and highs with some decent base. I know they are rated at like 60 rms and a head unit will put out no more than 22 rms or something in a perfect world.

My questions are:

1.) Would you recommend these speakers all around for my HU?
2.) Will I need to run new speaker wire or will I just use the exisiting?
3.) Will I need any type of brackets to mount these?

Thanks in advance guys!

Decent speakers, don't need new wire, no brackets. Those speakers should sound okay with ur setup, they are pretty efficient IIRC.

Thanks for the input nismos14. I will wait and see if any other org'ers have any input on this matter. I am not partial to Infinity so if someone knows of another good brand that will produce the results I'm looking for then by all means let me know! Thanks again nismos14

Looks like I can get 4 of these for $130 shipped. Good deal or no?

U don't need brackets but I highly suggest MDF mounting rings.

Take the back speakers out entirely, their really just for the people in the back. I would then sounddeaden over the holes in the rear deck. Up front I'd find a slightly used set of components and just put everything where the stock stuff went.

Theres alot of options out there for your price range, although spending a bit more for a better quality, reputable company would yield better results in the long term end of things.

Stock wiring is fine, the factory baffles will suffice, but for a couple bucks MDF rings will made the sound a bit more pleasurable. I will check to see what I have in stock, or on order to suit your needs. How far are you from Jersey? If too far I can always ship and have the rings ready for you to mount in. If you chose to go this route.

I believe something in Eclipse may suit your needs, but Ill confirm that later.

He just wants some replacements, I dont think hes going for a "system" setup.

Hey thanks for the replies guys! I am not considering sound dampering. I have two mtx twelves in the trunk. I am getting rid of those, I hate the THUMP THUMP THUMP all the time. I just want something with decent SQ that won't kill my wallet.

I want to keep the rear speakers for sure. What would you guys suggest for speakers then? I thought infinities were pretty decent... I could be wrong though. I am by no means an expert installer but I have installed the HU, ran rca's..power wire, remote on, and everything else for my subs. I do know some basic electronics so that is a plus I guess. I just didn't know if I would need new wires or not.

Pearl96Max:
I like the idea of the MDF ring/gasket thing. I am definitaly interested in that. Is there a place local (Pittsburgh) that I could get some? If not I will glady send you some bones via paypal for one if that is an option. Thanks for the warm welcome, I used to be on here couple years ago under the name ov3rdriv3 but I seem to have forgotten my password and I no longer have my e-mail addy I used to sign up with.

Any ways, whats some suggestions for speakers then that will give decent bass, good highs and mids? From the reviews I was reading these 6012i did exactly that. I could be wrong, or so could the people who reviewed them.

Thanks again guys! Hopefully I'll figure out what to order here pretty soon.

Give people a little bit of time to respond.

For the money, you can get better speakers than infinities

Also, whether or not you have to upgrade wire is dependent on what sub/amp you get. What kind do you have run currently?

Haha.. I am getting RID of the subs.. I am removing the amp too. That is not even part of this setup at all. I was wondering about the speaker wire from the HU to the doors and deck. I'm not hookin an amp up to these... just a MP528. Sorry if I confused you guys.

What about these...Kicker KS60 6.5" 2-ways. Sounds like they are just what I want, decent bass, good highs and mids. Any thoughts? I can't trust the reviews I'm reading.

For a few bucks over your budget, I can get ya into the Eclipse 6.5s.

Just use your factory harness/wire for the speaker wire. And yea, unless you are going to add another amp later, rip out all the extra wiring you have run through your car.

Just got through replacing my 6 year old Polks with four Alpine SPR-17LP. Bolted in without any modifications and sound much better with much cleaner bass. The magnet assembly is about twice as large as the old Polks and it looks like about the largest magnets that will bolt in the doors without cutting something. Paid about 100 per pair at etronics (60 less than Crutchfield wants). Hope this helps

I just installed last weekend some infinity references all around in my car. I put in component fronts (6010 ?) and 2-way rears (6012). I had to adjust the bass gain and equalizer settings on the new clarion headunit, and got the bass to sound pretty good. The clarity on these speakers is amazing, compared to the stock Bose. These aren't boomy, bass heavy speakers, so if that's what you're looking for, do not get these speakers.

I got the component front and 2-way rear for 190 shipped on ebay. The 2-ways are much cheaper, so if you go with those all around it'll probably be more like 130 shipped for everything.

I used the stock wiring and the stock speaker mounts. The 6.5's bolt right in.

Allright, it looks like I might just go and order the 6012i's off fleabay. I did find them for exactly $130 shipped for 4. Thanks ewuzh for the info, that is what I needed to hear. Bolt right in, no cutting blah... I think I will order these sometime today so hopefully I get them by the end of this week to give me a weekend project

Before I begin googling, anyone got the link on 4th gen front speaker removal? I remember it was in the FAQ or somewhere but its been a while. I have the link to how to get the rear deck out but I wanted to know about the doors.

If I remember correctly you have to take light cover off door and some screws. Also the one in the door handle under the plastic piece. Any suggestions while I'm doing this? Thanks guys for all your help!

Well I just ordered 4 of the 6012i's. Ended up being 134.50 shipped. Not too bad, 1 year replacement warranty. Looking forward to the weekend project. I found the link to get the front door panels off. It was acutally on the orgs modifcation pages. The tutorial is for chrome door handle but still need to take the panel off.

I have one question however. Should I buy a door panel trim removal tool or just use something else? I don't want to break any of the clips. Can anyone recommend something to get these off? I might try a dry run just to see how hard it is to get everything off. Should I buy the tool or is there something that works just as good?

Thanks for all your help guys, ill take some pics during the install and maybe make my own how to.

Just pull the panel. The clips pop out. No point in spending 10 bucks on a tool. Even if you somehow manage to break a clip, I'm sure you can buy a new one for 10 cents at any hardware store.

Today is the day!! I get my 4 infinities today via UPS. Hopefully they dont come through with their excellent "handling precautions"... ie. kickin it to my front door. I also just realized I have a door panel trim removal tool... some garage I took my car to, to get my window fixed, left one of those in my car. At first I had no clue what it was and one of my friends said it was a panel remover.. lucky for me.

Any suggestions... start with the back, or front? Any other tips, I'm kinda confused on how to get the panel off from around the seatbelts in the rear deck area. I saw the pictures in the how-to threads for 4th gens but it still seems tricky. I don't want to break any of the clips off and be stuck with it.

Yeah for that rear seatbelt c-pillar panel, I cracked that panel trying to take it off. So be careful with it. I ended up not taking it off and just lifting up the rear panel (after removing the backseats).

I did the same thing on both sides. I suggest when you pry it up stick your whole hand behind it to pop it out, that will help.

Also take the bottom part of the seat out first, and remove the entire back seat when you are doing the rear, so much easier.

So it is possible to take the rear deck out without having to take that panel off? I was looking at it yesterday and that thing sure does seem flimsy to me. I'm sure its not much to replace if it does crack but that would just be one less thing to go wrong.

This may be a dumb question, I have never physically seen the speakers behind any car door. Are the wires soldered to the posts on the speaker? Is there some type of connector or something? I am assuming that they are soldered. Any recommendations on soldering it? Ie, do it out of the car, then splice the wires, etc.. ?

I just really don't want to get in over my head by doing this. I mean I can tear my dash apart in 2 minutes just because I've swapped so many decks in there. I just ohpe the rest is as easy as the deck is.

Any recommendations for the door panels? I have read many different ways to try and get the door handle cup out. Anyone shed some light on it.. based on prior experiences? I'm sure some of you guys have swapped speakers in your doors numerous times so what works for you?

The door handle cup is easy. On the top towards the right side there is a clip that you can pop with a flat head screw driver, in the same spot on the bottom there is the same clip then after you up clip those, the left side of it has a retaining clip, pull the whole thing towards the left and it should release and allow you to remove it.

My stock Bose speakers were connected with those quick connect thingies. Just uplugged it from the + and - terminals. The Bose system uses +/- leads and a +/- 12volt source for the amps, so I had to look my Haynes manual to find out which two wire colors were for the speaker leads, cut them and crimped in my own quick connects. If you don't have Bose, then all you gotta do is disconnect the terminal/leads from the stock speaker and reconnect it to the new one.

As long as you know which is + and - for those speakers. The Infinity speakers should have wire that comes with it with terminals on it.

Also, I really hope you plan on returning that panel popper. I know that if I left any of my tools in a car I was working on, I would be very appreciative if the owner returned it.

Well folks, thanks for all your input. I successfully installed all four of them and they sound amazing! They are definiatly not bass speakers but the highs are so damn clear. Just what I was looking for!

It was a little more complicated than it seemed. Let me tell you.... I didn't take the rear deck off nor the cpillar panel in the rear. I just made a rainbow with my rear deck and was able to get a little chubby philips head in there to get the old speakers out.

Connecting these things wasn't exactly easy. The speakers came with no wires so I had to cut the old connectors (stock -- nonbose) off and solder it directly to the leads on the speaker. Yes, it was a little hard soldering in there but I managed to do it for all four of them.

I didn't break anything the whole time except for some of those clips that hold the wires in place... dead babies. Overall I am very pleased that I could do this, next time it will probably only take me 1 hour total.

Thanks for all your help guys and those damn door handle cups are a pain to get off, they do go flying once u get them off. I did manage to break off a couple of those grey cubes for sound dampering, glued those back on and added some foam to other places. No more rattles in my drivers door, and best yet -- I had to clean my car to get in there so I have a clean car too!

Thanks again everyone who has helped out!!! I really appreciate it! Play on

Congrats on the install. I know the feeling BTW, try playing with the equalizer settings on your headunit. After I adjusted mine, the bass was much stronger and the highs weren't as harsh.
