New findings with my amp (I know I'm probably getting old to you audio gurus...)
Short story: repaired what I could see that was with my amp, and tested it out over spring break. Here is my thread, containing links to the older thread explaining the amp's problems in a little more detail: Click Here
Basically, I turned off the Bass Boost on both my amp and headunit, and got around to adjusting the gain based on my general listening level. It hit harder than I've ever heard it with it being tuned a little bit, and I was pleased. I listened to sooo many songs, a lot of which had deep bass as an integral part of the song (read: rap/hiphop, heavy rock, techno), and none of them seemed to make the amp give off that awful smell that I had previously described.
So: feeling brave, I decided to listen to the song that originally made my amp have that burning smell: Gorillaz - Tomorrow Comes Today (for anyone who might know the song, if it helps any), and it made my amp start smelling again.
I haven't listened to my sub/amp combo in about 3 months now, and would like to get this resolved. I am at the point where I just want to buy a new amp and be over with it, but I still want to try to fix this one. Is there anything else I can try? Playing with the frequencies a little bit? Any adjustments on the headunit that I can make?
I'm still using 8 ga. wiring, planning on swapping that out in favor of at least 4 ga. this summer if I decide to keep my sub in the car. I keep asking this, but is there any chance that this is the problem?
Thanks guys, I'm trying to learn.

If I need a new amp, I'm probably done with car audio in that respect. I mean, I love having my sub, but it wouldn't be worth it anymore. Does anyone have any suggestions as to fixing it? Or adjusting another aspect?

DcMaN - Thanks bro for the offer, and I would if I was in CT right now. I'm in college at this point in NY, so it's not feasible for me to do it right now. Thanks though.
