How is this HU?

I want to change my HU, mainly because I want to hook up my subwoofer straight to the HU so the bass is better. I know I need the bose adapter, but how will this HU sound with the stock bose speakers?

It will sound pretty good. But, I would STRONGLY recommend the Eclipse CD Players. Excellent sound quality...

I agree, Eclipse or Alpine...... the reason I hide is because alot of guys aren't too keen on Alpine nowdays.... anyway, the Pioneer would sound ok, but I'd go Eclipse or Alpine for alot more sound quality.

Just so you know, the pioneer iPod controls suck! Go with the Alpine if you want iPod controls that are easy to use and the display actually displays title info, not just numbers like the pioneer does.

also, most alpines have stronger output voltages. most radios do 2v, and alpines ususally have 5v, gives your amp a cleaner signal.. i have pioneer in my car but, alpines are great units.

Uhhh no sir, thats incorrect. Alpines highest has been 4, but more importantly at rather high resistance rates.

For the past 2+ years Alpine hasnt even been able to live up to their claimed 4V which is only available on the higher line HUs.

Furthermore the majority of HUs on the market nowadays above the say maybe $200 range will provide 4V outputs. With the exception of Eclipse which all have 5 and 8 @55Ohm, excluding their entry level $150 HU.

Pioneer has always had alot to offer from low to higher end. Strongly competeing with Alpine (ie: P9 combo Vs 701+controller or HU of choice). In the past few years Alpine is slowly dimishing and Pioneer is standing strong maintain their ground.

A chance to prove Don wrong about something??

I'm going to say that Alpine has had 5V units before, the 7898 being one example that I could find. But I'm also assuming that you definitely know this and it merely slipped your mind because you've had to make room for that vast knowledge you have about all the GOOD brands these days.

EDIT: Also, back on topic, I agree with everybody who's said not to get Alpine. They've really gone down the sh*tter lately. The last respectable unit was the 9835, which you can find used these days on Ebay or forums for probably $300-$350. If you want to go new, definitely either Eclipse or Pioneer.

I had two of the 7998's and the 5 volt ratings were a mistake on my unit. They included a correction sheet in the owner's manual that said it is was actually 4V's. The thing was that the 7998 did not produce that for their sub-preout.

I also had a couple of 7949's and from what I remember those units tested at a tad over 6V's. The manual stated 4V's for these.

I would not go with Alpine's current regular HU's. Reason I went with the CDA-9835. Nice HU with good sound tuning capabilities.
