where there's smoke....?

i have a '91 maxima with the standard bose system. the other day, i heard some loud popping coming from the right front speaker (louder than the music i was listening to). immediately after that, white/grey smoke poured out of the speaker, and filled the car with the smell of burning plastic. i turned the radio off, and it stopped. when i turned it back on, the speaker sounded horrible. not being familiar with car audio stuff, but handy with tools, is this something as simple as replacing the speaker, or do i have a more sinister problem? assuming i can get the door panel off, is there anything obvious i can look for?
thanks, i appreciate any help anyone has...

most likely the bose amp went up in smoke and took the speaker with it. this is fairly common with the bose stuff. you can look around for another bose speaker/amp, or you can scrap the whole system and put in a full aftermarket setup. those are your basic choices.
but you WILL need to replace the amp and speaker in that door.
(if you haven't figured out already, each speaker has a small amp built into the speaker pod, right next to the speaker)
