10" IB installed in rear deck of 5.5 gen (pics)...

...and

1. I still have the OEM scissor bars holding the rear lid up.
2. I have a empty trunk once again
3. Sounds quite nice, especially for a Kicker Comp 10

I purchased black felt to cover the entire rear deck and custom speaker grill today. Did not like the grey anyhow. Should have that completed this weekend, but onto the pictures.

10" cutout is in same location as the 8" OEM bose would have been if my car came with it.

Nice install. Must sound really clean.

Have you thought about rounding off the outer edge of the grill? I think it would make it flow with the rear deck and appear a lot more stock looking. Just a suggestion, but otherwise great job!

If you look real close, I did a little. Unfortunately, I do not have a router, so I used a grinding wheel. Gotta be real careful with those. Still deciding on what the fional grill cover will be. I want to put some suuport across the opening so teh grill cloth does not sag. Looking for options.

Thanks guys.

To be honest, I was never a believer of the IB or "open-air" set-ups. I have always been a box builder. But, being married with 2 kids and no mini-van (thank god), I had to rethink my space capacity. So I just went for it with the assumption I'd be dissatisfied with the sound, but shame on me. IB is definately a pleasing alternative.

When I remove the rear deck to recover it in black, I am also going to add more sound deadening and seal it up more than I already have. I already covered every opening with metal tape, then used deadening (Frost King + 3M adhesive FTW hehehe) on top of that.

More pics to come once I am done...

First off, great job. I thought about doing something like this and may still go to it. I can't really tell in the pics....but how much space is there between the scissor bars and the sub itself? I ask this to see if you could do a fiberglass box that could bend around everything.

I'll take a look at it tomorrow, but from what I recall when cramped upside down in the trunk, it's about 1" between the bars and the basket.

Not much in the realms of SPL, but it hits nice and low. Lower than my sealed box. Remember, IB's are mostly set-up for SQL. I researched the living crap outta this before taking a Dremel to my rear deck.

I am running the doors off the headunit, so my overall sound levels aren't that loud anyhow. Loud enough, just not going to be winning any SPL awards. This is solely an in cabin system set-up.

nice. I really wanna hear this and see how a free air setup sounds in a maxima...if i did not have a 15 in the trunk I'd do this in a heartbeat.

Now that I've done it, I'd have to say, I can see how 3 10" subs set up as IB (or even 2) would sound incredible on the rear deck if done properly. My goal was to keep the rear deck as stock as possible without having to remove the scissor bars and install custom trunk lid supports. I will deal w/this set-up for a while (atleast til next year) then look for a better 10" sub that has superior sound over the Comp 10 and swap it out.

How did you connect it to the rear deck?

Great job, I am looking to do something like this since i already have a 8" bose sub back there, How hard would it be to expand the hole to a 10"?

One inch would be plenty of room to do it. The problem would be trying to do it tho.

No cutting is required with the addition of the mounting MDF plate.

My original plan was to use several nuts and bolts. So I used 2 wood screws to hold in place so I could drill the bolt holes then realized it was held on tight. So I put several wood screws through the mdf board from under the metal deck. It is on there so solid that I can actually move the car just by holding onto the magnet.

I used the 8" circumference already there, so I had to cut very little off of the passenger side and then a little off of the rear. Went throu about 8-10 Dremel cutting wheels to get the job done. Well worth it too.

Actually, cutting is necessary if..
1. You want to keep your scissor bars. (board mounted under deck)
2. You want to keep the subwoofer under the rear cosmetic cover. (board mounted on top of deck)

You will not have enough room to mount a mdf board and the subwoofer under the rear deck w/o removing the scissor bars.

Other option would be to remove the scissor bars and replace with 2 trunk lid shock supports. Then you have the entire rear deck to your disposal. I did not want to go this route as my route only cost me a couple dollars to do and looks/performs as if OEM.

Maybe the DLS OA 10 just fits a bit different.

Either way, great stuff. I really like the grill you made too.

An IB is just like using a large sealed box. The larger you go, the less effect the box has on the sub and the less it will color the sound. The Qtc of the system starts to approach the Qts of the driver.

IB systems are also becoming very popular in home theaters as well.

this is what i was hoping to do (replace the bose sub with either 8 or 10) , but I just got my max and dont really know how the bose setup works..its a 2k. I was wondering how you would hook up the amp to the wires already going back to the bose sub and amp. are the wires just there? or do you have to run wires from the head unit back? i figured that somehow the same wires that were going to the 8" bose could be used as inputs for an amp but i'm clueless as to how its all wired.. so can anyone help me here?
thanks!

well to keep it short, if you want to keep the bose HU then buy a PAC adaptor or something like it that allows you to add up to a 4 ch amp. this adaptor is near the HU and you will run RCA cables to the amp and then speaker wire from your new amp to the sub.....done call it a day,

SIDE NOTE: has anyone with the stock 8" bose sub hole put a 10" without any modifications to the hole, rear deck, or sub cover??? thanks!

Not yet - still working on the grill cover. I purchased the black for the rear deck, so I am ready. I just need to finalize my grill idea. I've got a great idea to make it appear OEM. Just hope it works out.

Side note: I just installed the XM Radio antenna and Sony adapter for my headunit and signed up for a one year membership. Took overall approx 1 hr. and it Kicks A$$!! Currently have the antenna on the rear trunk lid near the center of the window. Hope to route it around the window and mount on the rear of the roof.

I love my IB setup, although eventually I may want to try something a BIT different/bigger than 8's.

Almost complete! Woohoo!

My ideas finally coming through

For those of you who have been following this install, I'll either have teaser pics tomorrow night or possible completion of rear deck!!!

I finally got what I wanted to get and am borrowing a router for the final grill project.

edit: PART II with pictures thread here...

Yeap. Had this in mind for a while now. And now that I'm seeing that someone actually has done it, maybe you wouldn't mind helping me out with some questions I had in mind. Does this make the rear deck rattle a lot? And is the cutting hard to do? Keep in mind I'm doing this in an I30... I don't know if the rear deck metal is any different then the 5.5 gen max.

If you properly install sound deadening, you should have no problems with rattling. I used Frost King heater duct insulation and it worked fine.

I do get a slight vibration during some higher bass frequencies (not lower). It's a very random vibration as the freq that it hits doesnt appear to be a very common bass freq used in todays music.

I need to put a test CD in and see exactly what freq's is causing it so I can find the vibration.

The rear decks "should" be the same. I lined up the 10" sub with the existing eclipse shaped cutout for the stock 8" and drew my circle from that point around using a Sharpie marker. You'll see what I mean when you take off your rear deck cover. I then used approx. 10-12 Dremel cutting disks. The hardest part of the cuts was going through the thicker metal (double layer). The single layer metal was a breeze as long as I kept the dremel straight. If not... ...SNAP! argh!

Thanks alot for the reply nismopc. I plan on putting an Alpine Type X 10" subwoofer in there... Do you think it would be too much? From what I've heard from others, I think it should sound good. I mainly listen to techno 90% and I LOOOVEEE the way alpines sound... And eh, maybe 10% rap. haha =) Still... I haven't decided what amp to buy that would go well with that and make techno music sound even better than it already does. =) Anybody have any suggestions?
