custom enclosure

hey fellas, im looking for someone in the philly area, that can build me a box for my 2 12" kicker l7's.... if im not mistaken the box needs to be anywhere from 5.0 cu ft to 6.5 cu ft + port. the box will be going into my 03 max. i have absolutley no problem of helping in the process, i just dont wanna be raped with the price. and some of the prices i've gotten from various shops have been crazy as hell... any help is greatly appreciated.

kicker specs are: 12 L7

2.5 cu ft + port
2.5 x 13.25 port, 16.5 long

or

3.25 cu ft + port
3 x 13.25 port, 14.5 long

ask on www.caraudio.com, there are some really really good box builders on there, you'll get an offer in a second, and it will be way cheaper than a shop, and just as good quality.

i had a guy on the ca.com forums build my buddy a dual sealed box, he requested 1.5 cubes per chamber, slanted front face, all rounded edges, flush mount the subs, with a specific carpet color, and the thing was PERFECT, better than we ever thought it was going to be. On top of that, it was under $200 shipped (and it was massive!), and took less than 2 weeks. you just cant beat that.

if you check out the enclosures forum at CA.com, there should be a sticky with lots of box plans my friend drew up not too long ago. you can try to build it yourself.

Mike, you could definitely build a box yourself. From the work I saw in your car I'd say you're capable. You just need a table saw, jig saw, screwgun/screws, glue, wood and carpet.

thanks for your confidence... i would def try it myself but dont have a table saw to get those percise straight cuts... secondly i was doubting my planing skills, tryin to figure out the size, and what not for the box. i came across this site though that takes all the guess work out. so i might just got to home depot and get them to cut the boards for me. oh, the site is www.subwoofertools.com check it out sometime.

the guys at caraudio.com charge a nominal fee to design a box. Depot charges like $0.50 per cut, or if you find a nice guy, free.

home depot does NOT make precision cuts. just keep that in mind. the equipment they have on hand are mainly for course cuts.

In My Opinion A Box That Is 5-6.5 Cubes Is Huge For A Trunk... Ive Seen Ppl Assemble Boxes And When It Came Time To Installing Them= It Wouldnt Fit... Also You Need More Than Just A Table Saw To Build An Enclosure... You Want This Thing Done Right... You Want It To Sound Good Also... Let The Experts Build Your Box... Pay The Extra Loot For Peace Of Mind... Remember The Person Building The Enclosure Will Be Responxible For That...

SHOUT OUT to MENDON99 thanks for that link...gotta get ready for this road trip down to MD to get my box..
this is the design the guy sent me for the box.

he said it would be 5cu ft, and tuned to 34hz, i'll keep you guys posted

just a guess, but he might be saying that because the L7 are square, and the pic of the box has round cutouts... only a guess though... the guy building the box knows whats going in the box.

well, the front baffle can be cut to fit any sub if the box's physical dimension allows it. so far i don't see any issues with this box and your L7's.

Hey Guys

I am also working on a custom box right now...

Does anyone know what software was used to make that design?

also, are there certain sealing compounds which are better then others? (my box is not going to be ported)

the guy emailed me yesterday, said he had to sand and fill in the screw holes, said it should be done in a day or 2... yeah, it does look a lil big for the trunk, but i had 2 15" L7 in there before, and they fit pretty good. got my fingers crossed though. will keep you posted.

I always love it when a DIYer compares his prices against a retailer's, as if the stuff created in a garage is going to somehow determine pricing of a real product.

So, what you build as a DIYer isn't a "real product"

retailers usually bends unsuspecting people over.

so, whats the difference between a DIY box and a box made from a retailer? box does the same thing, only difference is the price.

Pessimism and mistrust doesn't mean there's any equity between the work of a pro vs. shadetree cats. Plus, the overhead is significantly more.

See above. Understanding of basic costs of running a business helps.

So basically what you're saying is, since it's a company with a company name, insurance, employees, building costs, material costs, and a whole slew of other financial factors involved, they have a "right" to charge you more than what someone who may be just as, if not more skilled than them, in charging you more for what could be an inferior product? Is that about right?
