Similar to Audiobahn - flashy, lots of fat surrounds, chrome, huge magnets, crappy performance.

alright simple enough. i really had no clue but their prices were decent so i figured it was worth looking into.

Looking at what i am planning on currently, one of the amps i was considering was a phoenix gold from last years model.. the R8.0:4 is the number i think. I know pg is pretty good, and in my setup, for the price i have lined up through a friend, that one seems like the way to go. unless there are any red flags here i figured i would buy it very soon. Overall i'm going for economy prices but quality with enough sp that i wont get bored with it or anything, so older models dont bother me much at all. what i want to do is get a 4 channel amp and comps for the front (the same friend has offered me some quart rfv 216s for under 100 bucks) and i'm gonna order an aa assassin 8", bridging it through the rear channels IB where the bose was. i would then pick up some higher sensitivity, low power 5.25s for the rear doors and power them off the hu for just enough rear fill, also ordering the knuconceptz wiring that i've heard good things about on here. the amp is rated for 75 rms at 4 ohms for the fronts and something like 250 with the rear bridged, which matched up well with the sub from what ive heard, but i was questioning whether 75 watts is enough to power the quarts that are rated for up to 140 rms, or if i should go for a different pairing. all of the stuff ive mentioned can be purchased for just around 450 bucks and i just dont have the money (in the car audio department anyway) to spend much more.

any comments or suggestions about any of this?

Sounds like a solid plan for the system. You may want a bit more power on the comps, but if they're sensitive enough you should be alright.

Ive had Alot of those Octane amps come back. Mighyt want to continue looking. That line is one of the primaries that sunk PGs ship...just food for thought.

Hmmm they were that bad? I guess the ones from a couple of years back were better? The early production run of the octanes?

ok so i got a list of brands he carries (for amps)---
-Hifonics
i like the looks of these and have heard some decent stuff about them
-Kenwood
not as excited, but kenwood can't be horrible, can it?
-Blaupunkt
i've heard of this but nothing about it.. anything decent here?
-DEI
no clue here (thats why i included it)

if you guys know anything about these brands or can recommend one specifically, that would be great. as of now i'm leaning towards the hifonics, either titan or zeus series if i can get it.. the 6406 model i believe, which would send 85 watts to the fronts and 340 bridged to the back. is this too much for the assassin? i know its rated for 350 but that seems kinds steep...

well i'd like to keep it right around 200 and all the amps i've mentioned i can get from my friend who owns a shop for about that. i realize that makes it hard to suggest other things because i can't see spending 500 bucks or whatever to get an amp when i can get a 5-600 dollar msrp priced amp for around 200-250.. but what about hifonics? i've been reading more and more stuff about them and haven't found much negative yet..

Yes 150 to the aa is plenty, and 75x2 to the fronts is also plenty.

ok cool. any ideas for components that would match the wattage? it might not be enough for the quarts.. or would it be ok? I saw some PG octane zr (75 rms) comps on sale for around 50 in his shop today and i thought they sounded really nice for the price.. any others in that wattage range or is that not much of an issue?

SLCs ftw.

on a side note, i was running 75w to them, and just couldnt take it anymore. went ahead and bridged the EA for 150 per side.. so much clearer, and a little louder

...and here comes the devil's advocate.

I actually run a partial MA Audio setup. 2 12" MA12SY Subs (predecssor to the Synergy series subs) on a HK2000D amp + a 1 farad MA cap (yea i know...no flames pls ) Anyway, I have nothing but positive things to say about the brand. I listen to all kinds of music - but mainly hip hop, r&b and reggae - and everything I throw in the deck sounds great to me. Not overly "boomy" and the subs hit a nice range of notes - of course alot of this is due to the Elipse deck. So, I would say that if you are looking at MA Audio stay away from the lower end stuff and drop the $$ for the higher end subs and amps. You can build a great sound with lower costs relative to the majority of other brands out there. My $0.02.
