JL 10W6 - recone possible? worthwhile? upgrade?

I have a JL 10W6 (original, not v2) in my 300ZX and I guess due to age the cone seperated from the foam surround (was listening at low volume when it happened). I liked the way it sounded in that car, but am wondering if this once-great sub is now junk compared to newer mid-grade stuff (looking at Infinity Kappa Perfect 10.1). The amp I'm running it off of is a PPI (pre-DEI) PC250 (so at least 200W RMS @ 2ohms bridged). I only drive this car like once a month so I didn't want to spend too much on this; trying to get some opinions... I know JL doesn't even offer the recone anymore but I think I've seen some DIY kits for it.

You're obviously a JL fan (as am I - 12w6v2). For the price of having it repaired, you might as well check out the newer models. The piece of mind would be worth it to me. Just one thought I guess.

don't DIY a recone unless you really have experience with it.

Much easier/quicker and eventually cheaper to replace it. Preferably not with another JL....

I will say there are many other options available that will more than likely provide the same level of performance and satisfaction as your 10w6.

Thx for the opinions.. I really like the Infinity KP 10.1 because of the rubber surround, high sensitivity (94db) and cheap price ($150 shipped for the pair). They're also 300W RMS max so that should be fine with my current amp. I guess I could stick the other one in my Geo - should sound better than the Kicker 12 that's currently in it.
