what to do while waiting for new head unit stuff

so basically its killing me that i have to wait for all of my new gear to be shipped to me, so i've been compiling a list of stuff to be sure is good to go to minimize the amount of work to be done when the head unit and modules arrive.

these are by no means the only things that has to be done for all setups, but for me this is all i can think of, i'm sure more will need to be done when i actually receive everything, but this is merely a preemptive strike at getting things ready.

please feel free to add/change this list from your own experiences.
  • Make sure all rcas are ran to the front (audio/video and related grounds)
  • Turn amp's gains to minimal levels (i could be wrong here, but i don't want to have these turned up to begin with, right?)
  • Make sure you have a proper ground ready to go (proper meaning paint sanded down and the necessary hardware in place to screw it down, etc)
  • Stock/old headunit pulled out and space cleared for new dash kit/headunit
  • Map out where you are going to mount/place the various modules (if any) -- in this case 2 to start with and eventually 3 total (ipod, bluetooth, sirius)
  • Decide where GPS unit will go and know how and where to run the necessary cable(s) for that spot
  • Know where to mount/install/wire steering wheel module/adaptor
  • Decide and prep area for bluetooth mic (if there will be a mic to be installed)
  • Prepare speaker to be used in conjunction with bluetooth module
  • Find place to mount said speaker and get that area ready
  • Decide on ipod location and map out wiring for that

That's all I got thus far. Any of you suggest anything else?

well not really anything to add to your list....but notes for when you actually DO the install. If you're not driving your car, take out your cluster and have it ready to tap the VSS wire.
DEF. figure out where you want to put all the modules. Some hints from my install:
- bluetooth unit..I just threw it on the bottom of the dash opening
- GPS unit...the AVN is all in one. NO "seperate" GPS unit. The Antenna I have sitting on my dash right behind the clock (you'll see a spot to mount it between two defroster vents)
- Bluetooth MIC...I ran that up to the top of the A Pillar. The Controller I ran down the center console and snuck it up the ebrake handle hole and mounted it right behind the cup holder.
- Ipod adapter...RIGHT on the left of the dash opening you can tuck in the wall (should be able to see if when you have everything OUT).
I ran the ipod cable straight to the glove box...nothing really difficult about that...should be able to feel your way over there.

Thanks for the response J. Ok so basically from your input here is what i'm doing in terms of module/ipod/gps installation.

Based on my current setup, I am going to refab a new plate to mount the bluetooth module, and i might as well run the remote base **** and mount it up there to. I MIGHT can mount the speaker for the bluetooth **** thingy there too. It will be a tight fit but I might can fit it in place of where I currently have my cell phone holder (to the left of the brushed-aluminum ****). For the ipod, I'm going to run it to the extra pocket thing at the center console (the part that is about 2" deep. For the bluetooth mic, I'll run it to the a-pillar and drille a couple of holes in a uniform pattern and might even stretch a piece of that boom mic foam across it (it will be minimal in size i'm sure). The GPS antenna/puck i'll put where you have yours (good spot!). Everything else I'll just tuck away in the dash maybe with velcro tape or something.

Now comes the VSS wire, i've heard so much about this, but haven't read anything in terms of where it is, etc yet. TO save me from the poor "free, non donating members" search, could you tell me a bit about it and what it is for and where it is (and its color, pink, i've heard)?

When you say cluster you mean the speedometer cluster? I've not removed that yet, so hopefully i can find an exploded parts diagram of that.

Thanks again J.

Use that to get behind the cluster.
It's the CENTER HARNESS..and yes it's the pink/another color (i forgot) =P.
I actually just tucked the microphone for the bluetooth unit up there...didn't permanently mount it and have had ZERO problems.

ALSO..forgot to mention the nav antenna you can pop out the clock (hard at first) and run the wire from there for a cleaner/easier install.

Good luck man

Yeah I put all my modules in the space under the shift **** and stereo... The iPod unit I was able to fit sitting flat behind the actual headunit.

Definately take the Gauge Cluster out for the VSS wire... as Burnurass said its a Pink/Blue wire on the connector right behind the Speedometer...

My GPS antenna I put right behind the Clock as well with the wire run right under the clock assembly... Pretty nice spot for it.

My Bluetooth mic I installed behind my rear View mirror...ran the wire around the top.

slow down there turbo, the ipod module won't even be in until friday
i was gonna do everything at once this weekend.

i will say though, don, i'm very impressed by the shipping packaging. it was pretty rad to see the peanuts in plastic bags instead of loose everywhere.

Ipod module takes 5 minutes to install...10 minutes if you including taking apart your dash.

DO it now bish! I already found a spot for your Ipod module, all you gotta tap is the yellow and black wire. Leave the settings on the module to default. Run the little wire to the glove box. DONE! no excuses!!!

ok i came home for lunch and tore apart the cluster to get the VSS wire hooked up, so that is done, i ran the parrot bt controller/**** thingy. so now i think all that is left is to hook up the steering wheel controller, and plug up the othe rmodules (ipod module will be here this afternoon, yay overnight shipping). then plug in teh speakers and let the fun begin

For the record, i knew what yellow/black represented (it says what it is in the instructions!) but just wasn't sure where YOU guys tapped it into. Bear in mind, I odn't have the unit or cables here in front of me.
