5th Generations Maxs and 8 inch midbasses

Does anyone with a 5th gen Maxima have 8 inch midbasses in their doors? I know I will need to make MDF mounting rings, but I'm wondering if I'm going to have to modify the plastic door covers........

You only need to shave the plastic on the panels slightly and there is bending and hammering involved on the door frame.

thanks to Handy Manny in helping me get these suckers in there

Just gotta shave the inside of the door panel so the backside of the speaker grille/cover is smooth.
Then hammer out or cut the speaker opening on the door frame.

O, good. I don't even need to make a mounting ring. Fantastic! Install should be easier than I anticipated. Although I must say that my 8 inch woofers are larger than most.

Adire Koda 8s! But we will see when it comes to install time.

Ok, well thats still no problem.

Whats the Xmax on those midbasses you have? The Kodas can move 14mm in one direction and I wouldn't want them hitting the door plastic.

Are you going three way up front? If not how high do the Koda's play?

I am doing a 3 way. When the Koda 8s were still in production, Adire claimed the Kodas could play up to 1khz. Although the drivers calculated piston range is from about 850hz down. I will be band-passing them in the 80hz to 300~350hz range. An Audax PA driver will take care of midrange duty and Image Dynamics horns will play from 1khz up.

I'm guessing they could go alot lower than 80? so only from 350 - 1k will be your midrange's?

The Kodas can play low, but they need a lot of airspace to do it. I've got them in a 3 cubic foot ported box in my room right now and they compliment my bookshelves VERY well. Maxima doors can't provide the airspace needed to give much extension below 80hz without serious modification. Thats something I'm not willing to do with this vehicle.

And yes, my midranges will be playing from about 350hz to about 1khz.

In all honesty, I don't feel the Koda 8's are well suited to midbass or subbass duty. They have the power handling capabilites to make use of that impressive suspension at midbass frequencies and require far too much airspace to really be of use lower than 80hz when mounted in doors. When they were made, 8 inch woofers with similar excursion capabilites were rare.

These days, there are plenty of 8s that trump the Koda in terms of power handling, extension, cone area and linear excursion. If I had the choice I'd go with different woofers, probably a Seas Lotus woofer. Although, money is tight and I already have these woofers so I'm just going to use them.

Very cool, I wouldn't mind sharing it. Although, I don't know if I will be able to install it this summer. I have to service my car and I'm not making quite as much as I hoped I would make. Maxima.org will know when my install is complete though. If you're still in the area, I'll be glad to let you hear it.

I think with enough juice on tap and a well deadened door, the koda 8's could play down to 50-60hz with ease and sound good doing it.
