Need help choosing a head unit

It's time to purchase a new unit for my 02 because my old Kenwood motorized faceplate does not work anymore. I've read alot about the pioneer avic-d3 and some eclipse units and I've thought about another Kenwood but I can't seem to make up my mind. I'm looking for a unit that is around $1000.
What would you recommend?

I've done a few Avic-D3 installs. There not all there hyped up to be. The clairty isnt great, and it lacks alot of features. Personally i think the features of the unit are just to plain. I think that the D3's are a good budget navi system, but if your gonna be spending 700~1000 for this unit save up and buy an eclipse.

Hmm the ones I've installed have sounded good, they also had plenty of features for the users but it all really depends on what you're looking for out of the unit.

The 6610 vs the D3 is close because to me they both pretty much have the same features and require additional parts to get IPOD, BT, etc. Functionality is pretty good as far as the eq goes and all the options I've played with on it. Though I've only got like 15 minutes of playing around time.

What features do you feel the D3 lacks? You can't really beat it for a navy unit > $1000.

I wish someone would just come out with a unit like this with 6v+ outputs and active capabilities etc.

Thanks for the responses. I've been doing some research on the eclipse headunits and I like the Eclipse AVN5500. Do any of you guys have this unit?

Crutchfield says the 5510 doesn't fit my 02 max. I'm sure it does, but what kit would I buy?

I just noticed the 5510 has 15 watts RMS/50 peak x 4. Don't most units have 22 watts RMS? Is this a big deal? I plan on running two 10" JL audio subs, a 300/4 JL amp and a set of rainbow components. (thanks Don)

What do you plan to mamp the subs with?

The rms won't matter since you (SHOULD BE) using the 300/4 on the comps and interior speakers.

I was going to use the 300/4 for the comps and the subs. I wasn't worried about the rear speakers.

reason number 1 why eclipse 5510/6610 > pioneer avic-D3....and i'm surprised no one said this...
BIGGER SCREEN! 7" screen vs. a measley 6.1" screen.
Also 5V preouts vs. 2.2V....and who knows if that 2.2V is even consistent?
The eclipse 5510 can be had at around the 1000 point.............

My price range is up to $1000. But I guess if the eclipse is more than that I will have to wait to get the unit.

How is the navigation on the Eclipse?

it is spot on and by far the most accurate...i've tried pioneer/kenwood/eclipse navigation systems.
I always use the example of a highway with 5 lanes and the highway splits. It will show on the map 3 lanes going one way, 2 lanes going the other way. And if it splits again (for example an exit on the highway) it will show that split too.

bad track record overall, and not really comparable to eclipse. Eclipse is a leap and bound or two above Kenwood overall..

you will not be unsatisfied with the eclipse.

Would you put Pioneer above Kenwood?
