Help with gain settings, crossover points etc.
I just finished installing a killer system into my POS 87 Maxima SE. Here's my setup:
Sony CDX 650-CA650X CD Head Unit
Sony XM-7527 bridged at 300W mono for sub enclosure
Sony XM-754HX amp at 4x75W for front and rear speakers
Diamond Motorsport M351i in front
Diamond Motorsport M361i in rear
JL Audio 12W3 Prowedge Enclosure
Phoenix Gold wires etc.
First, how should I set the crossover points on the amps? I have the low-pass filter on the subwoofer amp set to 50hz and the high-pass filter on the amp for the fronts set to 50hz as well. The frequency range on the Diamonds is 50hz to 20khz so they can handle a lot of bass. I heard the sub low-pass should be set up to 100hz but that seems too high and it sounds like **** when I set it there (too much boom boom from the trunk and doesn't sound natural). The current frequency settings seem to blend well but what crossover points you guys recommend?
Also, I played with the gain levels on my amps and I ended up setting them both at only about 25% from the minimum. When I set it any higher, I get hiss from the speakers at max volume. Ideally, I would like to be able to crank the system up to max and not hear any hiss. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Jeremy

Set the sub x over to abou 75 and down. the midbassto 50 and up...the tweeter x over to about 3k and up. gain settings should be dun by turning the volume on the h.u. up to half then turning each gain to the point that it clips then back it down a tad...then get an rta and match the levels...if you don't have access to one skip that. and enjoy.

All of your settings are ideal. If it sounds good, leave it. For best results, gains should be set as low as possible, and the front stage/sub xover points should be as low as possible.
I tried setting the crossover point for the front and rear amps to 75Hz and the bass seemed to move toward the rear of the car (not good) so I set the points back to 50Hz. I have the bass boost settings turned completely down since my sub hits hard enough without the boost and the gain is at about 30% on both amps - any higher and I either get too much hiss (from front speakers) at max volume or the sub drowns out the cabin speakers with too much bass. One thing I screwed up on is buying the Sony CDX-CA650 because it only has preouts for the front and rear channels. I'm going to sell it and get a CDX-M670 ES receiver which has 5.5v preouts for front, rear, and sub as well as built in low-pass and high-pass filters. Thanks for the advice.
