10" vs 12"...what a difference!

I have a 1.02cf sealed box in my car, powered by an old school PPI amp that puts out 200w rms.

I had an Orion C2102 2Ohm DVC 10" sub, and tonight swapped it out for a RF S1 12" 4 Ohm SVC sub. Didn't adjust the gains or any settings on the HU. The difference is incredible. The 12 goes lower and hits harder, as expected. Found a whole bunch of new rattles, at lower volumes than the 10".

I'm by no means a basshead, but expect my stereo to at least keep up with "Flight of the Cosmic Hippo" by Bela Fleck. The 12" brings in notes I didn't know where there before with the 10!

Now the question is why. Because the box is the exact recommend volume for the 12"? Because the amp becomes more efficient with a SVC sub? Because the box was double the size recommended for the 10? Or is it more simple than that?

several reasons. box was right size for the 12, the box for the 10 was too big, and the 12 simply have more cone area, so the lower notes will be reproduced a bit easier.

however that doesn't mean a 12 will always play lower than a 10. box design and sheer throw of the sub can allow some amazing notes to be played.

Word... it's just kind of luck of the draw in this case.
