Navi location question

I just got my JVC 7000 navi installed in my car and the dude that out it in put the antenna on the middle of the dashboard, right on top of the vents..
I dont like that becasue it just looks whack.
I asked him put it right under the registation paper but he said it wouldnt get signal. Is this true?
where else can i put it?, becasue leaving it on the dash, well right in front isnt cool looking

To mount the GPS antenna for my AVN6620 I popped the clock up and used velcro to mount it just under the dash towards the engine, just under the dash. It works well. XM is mounted middle of the roof in back on top of the back glass.

The antennas are magnetic. I mount every single GPS antenna right to the top of the body of the HU, completely hidden from all view. Signal is perfect.
