SPL setup

Hey fellas,

I'm thinking about dumping my current setup for something else. My PG are not hitting the way I want them to hit even after trying numeous boxes and setups.

I want to know from you guys based on your experinece and opinions what are good SPL type subs out in the market. The only sub that comes to my mind because I've heard one before is a 13" JL W6 in a ported box. Now, I know there is better and less expensive subs out there, but I'm not sure what are my options. I just don't want to end up buying some subs that look like they can hit hard and end up sounding like my PG subs. Unfortunatly my current subs are not good for ported boxes. I've built two boxes and tuned them acording to specs and don't sound as good as they do in a sealed enclosure. So please give me some feedback on this.

Thanks

Hey Bro,

Budget wise I can always sell my current setup and a couple of boxes I already have, so I think $1000-$1500??

I was looking at the Image Dynamics Max 12"D4 sub and their 1200 watt amp. Both would total about $1500.00, but if you have other suggestions please let me know

What power do you have? never mentioned. If its the 1200w xenon, probably isn't enough for a DD.

Fi Q or BL, ID IDMax, Audioque HDC3...

Id stick with 1 12" or 1 15" in a big ol' ported box, you'd be surprised how loud 1 sub could get..

This is all of course if you're planning on keeping it cheap-like. Once you start to get into much bigger amps, or multiple large amps, you really need to upgrade your alt which gets expensive - Its up to you how far you want to go.

So yeah, budget is needed if you're changing amps as well.

If you dont want to spend a fortune look at some Type R's.In the right box with a good 1000watt amp they will get plenty loud.

killer sub but not within his budget.

look into the AQ HDC15 or the new SSA XCONs. both of these should fit within your budget and get pretty darn loud in the right box.

Nothing cheap here bro. I can save for a month or two and get my self some good stuff. I rather wait to get quality subs and amp rather than getting some cheap ol **** that will not sound good. I do plan on getting one sub and build a ported box for it. So far I have the Big 3 and yellow top battery. I can also invest in a good alternator if I need to, but I want to make sure I get a good sub/amp combo that will hit. I want my girl to feel tingly (if you know what I mean) when the bass hits.

I dont mean that what i listed was cheap, but if you want to get the best out of your setup, upgrading your alt will take full advantage of bigger power amps, etc.

DD's can be had for 300-500 per woofer, used. Brand new they're probably much more.. check out the caraudio.com classifieds section. You need a lot of power for those woofers..

I know you didn't and sorry for making it sound that way. I meant to say that I rather pay $$$ for quality rather than saving $$$ and get crap. I think the DD's are out of question since I also want to conserve trunk space as much as possbile.

I was looking into the IDMAX 12"D4 sub in a ported box and their 1200 watt amp.

Would that top an IDMAX 12D4 and if so, what amp should I go for? I prefer something with remote bass control.

I just read on the AQ 1200 amp. Love the price and dimensions. My current amp takes up a lot of space.

yeah it should give more output. you can even try the Fi Q 12. i had one for awhile, and when ported, fed good power, is strong enough to flex my back window and roof.

Im loving the price. Amp and sub combo less than $500. Sweet deal. Now the only question left is how big should the box be? So far I read that for one 12 they recommend a 2.5^ft box, but no mention on port dimensions and what to tune the box to for optimal performance. Any idea?

i'd consider 2.5 to be on the larger side for a 12. it'll be a bit more efficient with the power. but you're gonna be sending quite a bit of power, so i'd step it down a bit. the box i used was 2.1 @ 35hz.

Are you refering to an Fi sub or AQ? I'm leaning more towards the AQ

Badly designed no matter what anyone says.
