RCA patch cable question

I was wondering if the middle wire (20 guage wire?) is supposed to be used for the remote line, or for a gounding for the RCA cables. I have a 4 guage power wire and my remote line (14 ft long speaker wire) running down the driver's side and my RCA's on the passanger side. I just want to make sure I get the cleanest signal. I ground both ends of the RCA cables, but I'm hoping I'm not creating more noise.
