Need help with PC!
Sup guys. I decided a few months back I wanted a custom built PC, and figured I would just let my friend put it together since he already did a few. So I ordered the parts from newegg, that he recommended, and everything seemed compatible, aside from the DD3 ram he messed up on, when I really needed DDR2, so I got some crappy lookin ram from the computer store around here. Anyway, my friend puts it together, everything works out fine. Except heres the problem. No display! No matter what he tried, there was never any display when he hooks it up to a moniter. He tried different wires and stuff, same thing. Everything works. It gets power, everything lights up, all fans work, just no display. After swapping parts from his PC, he concluded that it can't be anything other then the motherboard. So I took it off his hands the other day, and now Im here. I was hoping before I pay the computer store to find the problem, I thought it might be something small my friend could have missed, or something is not compatible maybe? I tried to take the nessacery pics, but if anymore are needed for a better look, feel free to request. Thanks!
Parts:
Not shown here is the hard drive, which is the "Western Digital Caviar GP WD5000AACS 500GB 5400 to 7200 RPM 16MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive - OEM"
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822136149
and the "Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Xtreme Audio 7.1 Channels PCI Express Interface Sound Card - OEM48494672" but that doesn't really matter here.
And the case:
Thanks again guys!

When i run into the no video situation the first thing i check is memory. Put only one stick in and try to power on. If it doesn't then take that stick out and put just the other stick in. I also only buy memory that is on the Qualified Vendors List(QVL) for the motherboard.

Do you have a Molex connector plugged into the videocard? Is your power supply good? Is your videocard on it's own power rail? The one thing you don't want to skimp on is the power supply...YOU DO GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! If you have a bad supply, it can cause all kinds of problems. Also, is your 6 pin plug plugged into the mobo? It is possible that you have a board with a bad PCI-E slot. Move your card to the other PCI-E slot, and make sure your bios settings are correct, and see if you get a video signal. Is your fan on the video card spooling up? Swap videocards with your buddy, if your card works in his machine, then you know it isn't the card. If a second card DOES NOT work in your machine, then you know it is either power supply, or mobo. You gotta start eliminating variables.

Sorry for the late response...
Yeah the video card works in his PC.
When I turn it on, I don't hear anything except the fans starting to spin.
Yeah, he tried that put one stick in at a time thing cause he heard that might be the case, but still nothing..
I wish I knew about that QVL before I bought the ram
Yep, the 6 pin plug is in. He tried the other slot, and said it worked. The video card also worked in his machine, so it can't be that. I don't see a fan on the video card, and he said theres no molex connector. But how can it be the power supply if it's getting power? Everything works, just no display on the moniter. The moniter stays on standby as if the PC is off. We also tried different plugs for the different moniters we tried to hook up to, and same thing.

Try unplugging everything except front panel and vid card and fans obviously... Use the jumper to reset the cmos battery. Make sure to wait 5 -10 seconds before restoring the jumper. Also make sure power supply is unplugged from the outlet before resetting. If that doesnt work, try moving the ram to the red banks. Your mobo should beep once during startup. If it does not, reverse the speaker plug. Ensure it is properly in the right pins. It will beep once if boot up was successful and have multi beep code if an error is detected. From the multi beeps, refer to owners manual on definition.

My problem was the power supply.
Took it to work and a friend who is a real geek, told me to turn it on. He said that he didn't hear the hard drive 'jitter'. Which means that the hard drive gets 12V but the controller gets 5V. He pointed to the extra connector on the P4 mobo. Turns out he was right.

Finally!
Thought I'd give you guys the end up.. So about 2 weeks ago, I got fed up with this thing just standing around, and took it to get raped for 80 bucks from a computer store. They took it apart in front of me, found some of the pins were bent on the processor, guess my friends doing, straightened them out, asked for all the parts manuals, and told me they'd call me the next day. Called me back in the afternoon the next day, and told me they have good news, that my PC works great and I should come pick it up in 2 hours. I get there, and ask what the problem was. So the manager or owner first says he has no clue, and to ask the guy who worked on it, so I ask and hes like "do you really have to know? it works doesn't it?" So I go "well can you please just tell me, so I know what was done, and so I can maybe learn something?", and the guy who worked on it is like "well it was a really technical issue, and you should let specialists assemble your computer next time." Great answer, ***** Anyway, I tried some more to figure out what he did, but with not much luck. He claims something wasn't connected right, and some of the parts weren't too compatible even though they are in and functional. He did reassemble everything very professionaly and neatly and even got my temp gauges to work. So all in all, it was all right as long as I got a nice powerful modern PC finally It's so fast, and tackles any game I throw at with ease.. It's got 10 freakin USB ports as well! My old one had 2.. lol
Some pics.. That thing looks pretty sweet at night.

Hehe, yeah I hope the next guys I try will be a bit nicer but with the same skills. Usually in life you only get one or the other.

It's either that, or they found one very simple thing wrong, but wanted to bill you the full $80, so they couldn't tell you how easy it was.

Thats exactly what I was thinking and I'd put my money on that. BUT, it's also a possibility that they had no clue what it was either hehe.. He probably reassembled everything, and it just so happened that it started to display. Cause my friend did a pretty messy job.
