iPad installed, in-dash, in a Maxima!

Now that they've had more than a week to think about it, SoundMan has once again done a car install of the wündertablet, this time sticking it into the dash of a 2004 Nissan Maxima.
Follow the jump to see how the follow-up install went, but know that SoundMan has taken a remarkably different tack with this configuration, making a simple notched slot for the tablet to slip into, with a single plug leading to the existing audio system's aux jack. Slipping the iPad out of its holder reveals that the Max's stock navigation and back-up cam screen are still functioning in their original locations. Assuming glare isn't an issue, this install is very trick.

Scosche has developed a double-din solution called the iKit for installing the new iPad where your stereo used to go. It's not the most elegant setup because it's intended to keep your iPad portable, with a rotating dock at the end of a ball-joint mounted in the dash. But if you just gotta jack your iPad into your car and still have it handy when the ride's over, the iKit could be for you. Follow the jump for Schosche's official demonstration vid of the iKit with all the details.

Seems like most the comments on that blog and on the youtube video are pretty negative. I guess while cool in concept, it could be pretty dangerous with how irresponsible so many drivers are today. Not only would you have movies at your disposal, but e-mail, web, etc. Could easily be a distraction. Until cars drive themselves... unless there was a "car mode" that activated on connection to the car that gave you access to limited services, like music and GPS.

Interesting. NHTSA mandates that aftermarket in-deck units have a safety disclaimer upon boot of the in-dash navi. Wonder if they're going to somehow mandate the same in iPad software. Apple will likely not allow a splash screen, but each piece of mobile app - Google Maps, Tom Top app, etc, should at least have a safety statement in their terms of agreement.
Interesting though, eh? I've seen people install computers into their cars with screens, but those are relatively few and far between. The iPad is the first time I've seen a non-HU device (and one so capable) being installed for use like this. It's not quite the same as having an iPod / iPhone somewhere, there's not many things you could do with those devices at arms length.

I agree on the size issue. But "not functional enough"? In what way, GPS? I don't see how Android makes a difference.

iPad doesn't have real GPS, a lot of the Android devices coming out have GPS receivers. Also the multitasking thing, although I've read that'll be fixed eventually on Apple devices with an OS update.

The original Toyota install looks alot better than the max install they didn't put much effort into this one. Also current gen ipads arent meant for this use so will be very limited in function plus like mention just creates more distractions while driving. But give it some time Tablet Pc's will be the future of car electronics its just in the early stages right now.

i think the ipad is way too big. Personally i just sit my iphone in the ashtray spot on the console and hook it up usb to my head unit. I can see the screen fine, use it for gps etc. I wouldnt mind having a mount to have it flush with the dash in a double din though.

I agree, I wasn't saying that it did actually did change or was being tracked.. was kind of joking actually, hence the 'ha' on the end of the sentence.
