Confirming a few things

I'm wanting to get a new stereo, I was looking at the Pioneer 4200UB

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

I wanted to make sure that would work with the metra 70-7551 and see if anyone had experience with it.

I also wanted to confirm a few installation things:

1. That the 70-7551 would work with the stock BOSE stuff (I know the BOSE stuff sucks, but I can't afford to replace the speakers and everything)

2. That to get the TRIP button to work I just needed to ground the brown wire in the smaller clip of the stock stereo (I know that this will not make the steering controls work)

Also, has anyone had experience with this schosche installation kit? Like quality, color match, etc.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...=ATVPDKIKX0DER

Thanks for any help!

I have the same schosche kit installed in my car with a double din nav unit. Overall I think it is good, the color match is close but under bright conditions you can clearly see the difference. Also the unit is not as sturdy as the stock mount because it is all plastic. The nav unit I have is quite heavy and the schosche supports flexed a bit when I installed it. It does the job and looks good and for the price I think it is worth it.

Here is a pic I posted a while ago. It's kind of dark but you can still see the color is off a little bit.

Confirmed for both 1 and 2.

As for dash kit, The Scosche is decent and does the job. If you use all the needed brackets it's firm enough, and you'll NEVER get 100% color match unless you get a GXE kit, which can set you back $100+.

One thing to keep in mind is the width of the unit. I have a Pioneer MVH-8200BT and it wouldn't fit the Scosche dash kit because the Pioneer was too wide.

I ended up having to get the Metra 99-7416. The fit is okay, not perfect. However the plastic on the Metra is completely black. I just eventually got used to the color mismatch.

Just went though this myself and yes the 70-7551 will work to install an aftermarket HU. Just make sure you connect the amp wire. For some reason I forgot that last night and it took me an extra 15 minutes to figure out what the heck I did wrong.

I still have no idea what the heck I'm doing wrong but the trip button still doesn't work for me. Brown wire is grounded. just nothing happens when I press the trip button.

The Scorsche kit works fine. Yes the mounts feel a bit flimsy but if you support it while screwing in the top[ screws it holds quite well. Yes there is a slight color mismatch on the surround but it's mostly the texture that you will notice versus the color:

This was taken this morning:

Thanks! I did have one question, what would you consider the best way to get the upper ac vents out? i have the shareamemory page, but i'm just kinda worried about breaking the plastic side clips

Hehe.

Do this. Remove the shifter trim. Remove the two screws holding the lower part of the radio/AC bracket. Then lift the lower part of the bracket to you slowly. Do it carefully. The top part of the bracket will lift, and create an opening for you to get your fingers under the lower part of the AC vents.

I tried this and the shareamemory ways and i just can't get those freakin side clips to come undone, is there any specific way to deal with those? It's a freakin PITA

Yes it is but it gets easier the more you do it.

For me it's easier to get a small flathead screwdriver behind the bottom part of the vents and spring the clips from there. (essentially doing the same thing as lifting from the bottom of the stereo) Then put your screwdriver behind the top part of the vent straight back.

If you are still having trouble with this tomorrow. I'll put up some photos or a video of how to get the vent off since I'm changing my headunit again.

Also what would you all consider the best grounding points to connect the wires to? I've heard about the ground loop if i'm not careful so i wondered where most people mounted them

For a HU? The TCM is held in by two 10mm bolts behind the radio, towards the base of the cavity. Just use one of those - I've never had an issue there.

Yea, it's pretty common. Usually a loose connection - but people have had luck with replacing the inner bulbs on the unit.

ok, so i've got the whole thing installed, radio works, etc etc... but now i'm having the same problem as froggmann... i've tried grounding the brown wire multiple places, and have had no luck getting the trip button to work... is there some trick?

Scratch this... i found that i had grounded the wrong wire... i had grounded the brown wire from the back speaker clip rather than the computer clip...

But i now have a fully functioning stereo and trip meter...

Thanks All Who Contributed!
