Distortion at Higher Volumes
Distortion at Higher Volumes
Hi Everyone,
Hoping someone can give me some insight here...I've never really done much car audio work, just in-home receivers/speakers.
When I got my 95 SE, it had the stock non-Bose system installed, and the original head unit had a bad display. The stock Panasonic speakers were okay, but weren't up to my standards for sound quality.
I put in a JVC KD-AHD69 head unit, I chose it based on the positive reviews, price, and feature set. The speakers were replaced with 6.5" Boston Acoustics all around, and there is a dramatic improvement in the sound quality.
I can go fairly loud with it, but if I've got the windows open and am climbing a hill (additional engine noise), it seems that I have to push it to the point of distortion for it to be loud enough...the distortion is very slight, but it's annoying, and it distorts too soon...I'd think I could go louder with it without this issue.
Is this a power issue? I've been told that if I put in a 4-channel amp, it will probably correct the issue. I do know that the head unit is rated much lower than the speakers for wattage.
I'm not a subwoofer guy (don't have one in any of my 2-channel setups at home)...not crazy enough about bass for that (and these Bostons actually put out quite a bit of bass--more than enough for my taste).
Like I said, it sounds absolutely fantastic right to about 3/5 volume, and it's plenty loud enough most of the time...but there's a few cases where I'd like a little more to it. It's my opinion that the speakers can take quite a bit more, but the head unit just can't provide any more power.
Any ideas?
Thanks a lot!

Yea your HU can't put enough power out to fully maximize the potentional of the speakers. Now not havin enough power can make them distort as well, since after a certain frequencey the HU just can't keep up. Gettin a 4-channel amp will majorly improve the output of the speakers with out distorting cause it has the power to properly push them an you can tune the distortion out.
Hopefully this help some an if I'm wrong please someone correct me but from all my experiences with car audio, this is what I've experienced
