What to look out for when buying USED speakers?

Hey, I can save a bundle by buying used stuff.

I want to purchase some speakers, is there any way I can inspect them or something visually without hearing them to tell if they are good or not?

Do speakers loose their quality over time? How bad and how can I tell?

this may seem like a dumb question to some of you, so please bear with me here

thanks

Check out E bay, you can get a good deal on new speakers, still in the original box. Just make sure and price them first and the seller has a good rating. I got a brand new amp and saved over $100 than if I brought it retail.

I know there are lots of good deals for new stuff out there. I am just wondering if it's worth it buying used.. Some Top of the line speakers cost a lot new. Say I buy them used at a price of "average" speakers. Or is there no difference between the 300$+ speakers and the 150$ or whatever ones?

thanks

Well, I'm no installation expert or anything like that, but it's just plain common sense to be weary of buying used ****. "As is can mean @ss out when comes to getting defective merchandise.

that's the thing, I'm far from an expert But as with everything else, you can save some $ buying used, but I just don't know how it is with speakers, if it's worth it, I suppose it's not an item you can inspect visually and draw a conclusion.. but do they "wear out" with time? lol.. I don't know.. i may just wait until i can afford something new and exactly what i need.

Yes speakers were out over time. Look for abuse. Things like scratchs(from poor install), cracks, dryness, to much play, just comom sence things.

That has got to be one of the worse ideas ever..unless you buy the speakers off a friend i wouldnt do it. Plain and simple a speaker is one big moving part...moving air constantly. You wont know if its been abused...if the voice coil is close to being burnt out due to distortion ( distortion will not be heard in a bandpass/plexiglass box )it may look healthy but it might be just about to die and yout wont know untill it happens. Bottom line..buy some new speakers.

man I was in your shoes a few weeks ago. It seemed I could afford some speakers, but some stuff came on and I gave up till better times. I would avoid buying used at all costs, the best reason is that performance deteriorates over the time, and someone can simply sell you the blown s***. All depends on your needs and budget. I could have replaced all 4 speakers in my car for 100 bucks, but the difference in sound won't jusityf me spending that money. Recently, I saw Infinity Kappas components that everyone is talking about for 155+20shipping, brand new on Ebay. There's a company that sells them all the time.

Some of my best purchases were used amplifiers and speakers....

As long as you do your homework, check references and demand pictures it's possible to come away with good used gear.

Some of my amps are 10 years old and they still ROCK!!

Hey, yea I remember you were selling them for a while now. I was actually speaking of components, since my whole stereo is still stock and all i got is a new deck. For quick improvement i'm just looking for an amp and some speakers for the doors/rear deck, when if i get money for subs, I'm keeping you in mind no doubt.. if they are still not sold by then.

It's not dumb and I'll tell you from experience... I sold my 2 12" Punch (circa 1997) in my custom built ported enclosure (built by yours truly) for about 250.00 and those things POUNDED. The low end rolloww was incredible. The person I sold them to got a deal. However, on one sub, the voicecoil was a little damaged but acted as a radiator. Anyway, I made it aware that there was a damamged speaker.

You can tell a blown voice coil by pushing down on the cone (w/a rag because the oils in your fingers will damage the cone if it's paper) and if you feel resistence, it's damaged.

Look for cracks or splits around the foam or rubber edges etc.... It's worth buying used if you get a steal.... But only if it's a steal...

id never buy used speakers unless i knew the person they were coming from, but the obvious things to look out for are corroded terminals and tears in the sub
