Unscrewing stock deck from metal bracket
Unscrewing stock deck from metal bracket
I just purchased a new aftermarket deck and cannot unscrew the stock deck out. Those are screwed in tight! I managed to basically strip all 8 screws holding the stock Bose unit to the metal bracket that holds it to the dash. Anyone have this problem or have a solution?

I had that problem big time. That glue they used to fasten those screws worked very very well!
Anyways, to get thos screws off, I got the beefiest phillips head screwdriver I could find, applied all the force I could on the screwdriver while I was un-screwing it, my inner palms were all red and sore after each attempt, and got one screw out. Went away for like 45 minutes then came back and did the same thing for the next screw.
It took me 2 1/2 hours just to take off those damn screws! But I got 'em off without stripping

you can buy an impact screwdriver tool at most tool shops.. craftsman makes one for about $25. VERY wise investment if you do much work on these cars (some things are held together with only phillips heads and are almost impossible to remove without one)..
but that's how I got a few of them out.. clamp the stereo in a vice to hold it in place (not TOO hard or you'll damage it), then stick the impact tool on it and hammer away. a few mild whacks and the screws should come loose.
on the few I stripped before that, I used about a 1/8" bit and started drilling right through the center of the screws. once I got about 1/8" into the screw head, the temp difference between the parts caused the screws to pop loose (watch while you're drilling and you'll see the screw turn a little bit. the drill bit is smaller than the X on the screws, so you'll see the X turn). but as soon as they pop loose and start turning, stop drilling and remove the screws with a screwdriver. easy stuff, mang!
