Pioneer's will last friggin forever if you don't beat them up.
I bought a KEH-P8000 and a DEQ-9200 tape/ch controller and EQ in about 95 sometime.. sold them a couple years ago to another board member.. he's still using them today and has had ZERO problems with them.
I bought another Pioneer (Premier DEX-P1R) a couple years ago and it's even better in build quality than my last one. can't ask for anything better than that.
sound quality and features are also top of the line for their price.
only drawback is they have a bunch of useless bells & whistles.

But the 917 does not have a removable face which is kinda important here at least!

Well, I have had 2 Kenwood CD players in the past 8 years. My first was in the top model in the first line of MASK receivers that Kenwood came out with. I enjoyed it, but only sold it when I sold my totaled Eclipse. The seconds receiver was one that had MASK along with the faceplate being chrome. I can't remember the model number, though. Anyway, the MASK motor broke once and I had to send it to a repair center. They charged me about $115 including S&H and insurance back to my door. It worked fine for about another year and then the display stopped working. I mean, the buttons would still light up, but nothing would appear on the display. It was a real PITA when I took it out of the car and reinstalled it. I had to reset everything, but since I couldn't what was being set, it took forever to set things by ear. I called the service center and they said it would cot about $150 to fix it. Well, I didn't want to spend a total of $265 for repairs on a CD player that was 2 years old, so I just removed it and bought a Pioneed Premier DEH-P730. Very good deck. It just gets on my nerves how the sucker stuck out of my dash. So, I sold it to a friend and I am waiting on the new Kenwood MP3 decks to hit store shelves. I am happy with every aspect ofthe Pioneer except that it sticks out of my dash. I would buy Pioneer's MP3 player, but I would still be stuck with the same problem. As far as a recommendation is concerned, either one is fine. Pioneer is great, but as Matt said, it has a lot of useless bells and whistles. If you have additional EQs and processors, many of the features of the top line Pioneers will indeed be useless. Kenwood is a good deck with many good features; the best being MASK in my opinion. As long as it works properly, there are no hassles. I personally think that Kenwood is better. The other CD players that have owned since I have been 16 include JVC, Clarion Pro Audio, and Alpine. They have all been fine, it's just a matter of preference, and I prefer Kenwood. BTW, sorry for the essay.

I have the Pioneer DEH-P900R Premier, and I love it, I always get compliments on it, and whenever I have had a problem with it Pioneer has always been great in helping me getting it resolved.. The only thing that I dont like about Pioneer, is the fact that they make you purchase a tuner box if you add the motorized 7" Widescreen unit.. That is the only complaint I have with them.. GO WITH THE PIONEER
