Some subs work in an up or downfiring box, some don't. Depends on the stiffness of the suspension. Go to the adire audio web site -
http://www.adireaudio.com/Tech%20Pap...rientation.htm

Do the formula to find out if the sub you want will work properly.

Dunno about downfiring boxes but for $800 I'd either get 2 Infinity Perfects with a JBL 1200.1 powering it from Ebay for about $400 plus a custom box and amp kit you're gonna need for another $300... or if you're into subs that will hit harder look at getting Some Image Dynamics IDQ12s or somethin.. if you have $800 just for some subs and a box I'd get 2 Image Dynamics IDMAX 12's and a custom box... killer SQ and SPL.. IDMAX12 are the best subs out there fo sure

Well, for the subs, I would either go with the Audiobahn 10" or 12" Aluminum series sub. The part number in eBay is Audiobahn alum10x and alum12x. They are 800 watts RMS, not peak, but RMS. Right now I have 500 watts going to each powered by a cheapo 1000 watt Crunch amp. It hits so hard it is amazing. But good luck.
