jl w3 questions

i recently bought a pair of used jl w3's now neither are blown, and my boxes are air tight, but i am getting some serious noise, vibration from either the box for the sub, i tried fiberfill, no help, i built directly to specks, and know my materials are good and workmanship is fare

my question is, those who have owned w3's did you have noise? how did you solve it,

or if you are a expert on building boxes, and help there would be appreciated,

i Could lower the box cu' but it would be out of spec

any recomendations would be appreciated

this sentence of yours isn't clear to me. but if your getting vibration from your box that's not good, it should be sturdy enough to get no vibrations.

yeah it didnt make any sense

lets try again
the speaker is acting, as if it doesnt have controll over itself, the same type of response i would expect from a free air speaker, but its in a rec box size, i even tried fiberfill... i THink it made it worse!

kinda like it cant handle the power im giving it, but it below rms?!

unfortunatly i didnt have much time to work on it last night, i might try filling the box with extra 2x4 pieces see if it helps,

any rec's please?

while playing bass heavy music, hold each of the corners together as tight as you can and see if it clears up--that way you can target where a 'leak' would be coming from

Could it be the sub is not playing tight enuff because it is under-powered?

What kind of amp are you running? What wiring setup are you using?

i would have to say it sounds like a power handeling problem

at the lower frequencies it does great, and at lower power it does great... but louder you get, more of a "fart" you get

ill have the real music, but on top of that is the speaker making noise

pop's crack

excursion is good and all, i cant figure it out, ive got amp crossed over at 70... i even had my hdunit crossover at 50, it sounded better like that, but it still made teh sounds

it sounds like the speaker just isnt contstrined enough

W3's need some power. You should be running about 200 W a piece to be safe so you don't need to overpower the amp. Double check your wiring too. It sounds like it could be miswired.

are you sure you dont have the gains too high? clipping can really make any sub sound like ish.

clipping isnt based on the % the gain is up...its when your cd player puts out a higher voltage signal than what you have set the amp up to receive. most people think (incorrectly) that the gain is just a volume ****, when that is far from the truth.

eric
exactly. the gain should match the incoming voltage signal from the headunit.
